Griz split Sunday doubleheader
10/8/2023 9:08:00 PM | Softball
The Montana softball team split a pair of games against Carroll on Sunday as it continued its fall exhibition season at Grizzly Softball Field in Missoula.
Â
The Saints took Game 1 in eight innings, 4-3, before Montana bounced back with a 9-1 victory in Game 2.
Â
Montana never held a lead in the opener, falling behind 2-0 in the top of the third before tying it at 2-2 in the bottom of the sixth on a Kynzie Mohl home run and an Elise Ontiveros RBI single.
Â
After the teams played a scoreless seventh, Carroll had the game's big hit, a two-run home run in the top of the eighth that gave the Saints a 4-2 lead.
Â
In the bottom of the eighth, after a pair of fly outs, Presley Jantzi had an infield single and Jessica Stanfield brought her around to score with a triple to left.
Â
With the tying run at third base, Carroll ended the game by getting a line-drive out to third base.
Â
"We had some opportunities to make some noise in that game and really open up the door," said coach Melanie Meuchel. "Carroll competed hard. It came down to a swing that put them up by two.
Â
"As a collective unit, we were pretty unhappy between games. Our message was, how are we going to respond?"
Â
The Grizzlies responded by scoring three runs in the top of the first in Game 2 and never looking back.
Â
Grace Hardy came through with a two-out single through the left side that scored two and the Grizzlies later scored on a wild pitch.
Â
Kelly Sweyer and Riley Peschek had RBI singles in the third as Montana extended its lead to 5-0. Sweyer put the Grizzlies up 8-0 in the bottom of the sixth with a bases-loaded double to left.
Â
That was plenty for Game 2 starter Allie Brock, who only allowed one base-runner through four innings, a walk she issued to lead off the top of the second.
Â
Rylee Rehbein, in relief, ended the fifth with two swinging strikeouts and opened the top of the sixth the same way. Freshman Nyeala Herndon made her fall debut pitching the top of the seventh.
Â
"We started getting things going early offensively and Allie Brock gave us every opportunity to be able to score in innings," said Meuchel, who used pitchers Grace Haegele and Emmalyn Brinka in Game 1.
Â
"We're doing some things on the mound that are giving us opportunities to stay in games and really compete well."
Montana will wrap up its fall season next weekend, hosting MSU Billings on Saturday and Providence (MT) on Sunday. Both doubleheaders will start at 1 p.m.
