11/21/2023 8:56:00 AM | Football
Montana linebacker Braxton Hill was named a finalist for the Buck Buchanan Award for the Defensive Player of the Year in the FCS on Tuesday by media outlet Stats Perform.
Â
Hill is one of 30 finalists from around the nation and one of just three from the Big Sky Conference for the Buchanan Award, which is presented by FedEx Ground.
Â
The senior from Anaconda finished the regular season with the second-most tackles in the Big Sky Conference with 91, 33 of which were solo, to average 8.3 total stops per game to date.
Â
He's also tallied 4.5 tackles for loss and 2.5 sacks, picked off two passes (one of which he returned 34 yards for a touchdown against UNC), broken up five passes, and recovered a fumble.
Â
With 194 career tackles, Hill is poised to become one of Montana's most prolific tacklers of all time, needing just 20 more stops to enter his name on the program's top-40 list.
Â
On Sunday he was named the co-recipient of the team's Tony Barbour Award, given annually to the player who best exemplifies outstanding practice habits and makes an unselfish contribution to the betterment of the team.
Â
A team captain, he's been a leader on Montana's stifling defense against the run this season, which has allowed less than 100 yards on the ground per game (96.5) by opponents – the least in the Big Sky and a top-eight ranking nationally.
Â
UM's scoring defense has also been exemplary, allowing opponents to average just 14.5 yards per game against the Griz, the fewest in the conference and the third fewest in the FCS.
Â
The Grizzly defense has also been steadily improving as the season has gone one. Montana finished the regular season as winners of seven-straight and has outscored its last four opponents 145-24. Â
The Buchanan Award, first presented in 1995 and in its 29th season, is named for legendary defensive lineman Junious "Buck" Buchanan, who starred at Grambling State as part of his Hall of Fame career. Past recipients include Dexter Coakley, Rashean Mathis, Jared Allen and Arthur Moats.
Â
Montana has a long history of success in the FCS Defensive Player of the Year. Hill is now the 16th Grizzly to be named a finalist for the honor. Montana has had three winners of the Buchanan Award as well. Most recently, linebacker Dante Olson was named player of the year in 2019, Tyrone Holmes won in 2015, and Kroy Biermann won in 2007.
Â
All 13 FCS leagues, comprised from 15 conferences overall, are represented by a Buck Buchanan Award finalist. The winner, to be selected by a national voting panel, will be announced at the FCS National Awards Banquet on Jan. 6 in Frisco, Texas – the eve of the FCS championship game.
Â
Like the Buck Buchanan Award, the winners of the Walter Payton Award (FCS offensive player of the year), Jerry Rice Award (FCS freshman player of the year), Eddie Robinson Award (FCS coach of the year) and FedEx Ground Doris Robinson Scholar-Athlete of the Year Award will be honored at the national awards banquet.
Â
Montana now has three finalists for national awards. Head coach Bobby Hauck was named a finalist for Eddie Robinson Award and running back Eli Gillman is a finalist for the Jerry Rice Award.
