Montana track and field returns to action this weekend at the Lauren McCluskey Memorial meet in Moscow, Idaho. The meet begins Friday morning with multi-events before a selection of races and field events in the afternoon. The bulk of events will take place from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday.
Â
The meet will be streamed live on ESPN+.
Â
It's the second straight competition weekend for Montana and head coach Doug Fraley. Last week, the Grizzlies had just a few training days after returning from break. Now, with a full week under their belt along with a competition, Fraley is excited to see what his athletes can do.
Â
"We've got a lot better idea of where the team is fitness-wise and in their sharpness of skill after coming back from break and getting a week of training and then competing," Fraley said. "We always say you want to progress from week to week during indoor season and this is another opportunity for us to do that."
Â
The Grizzlies are excited to the multi-athletes their first action of the season. Brooke Stayner and Whitney Morrison return with high expectations. Stayner scored a point as a freshman at last year's Big Sky Indoor Championships while Morrison finished ninth. The duo both scored in the outdoor heptathlon.
Â
"It's exciting to get the first multi of the year in. We've got two returning scorers from the Big Sky meet with Brooke and Whitney who are pretty experienced multis. Those are two of the best female multis in the conference so we're excited to get them going and see where they are at in the real thing."
Â
The men didn't have a representative in the multis in Fraley's first season, but will have an entry this year in Porter Coffield. The sophomore from Boise has been training across the multiple events in the first two meets of the season and is ready for his first collegiate multi.
Â
"We decided to give Porter a shot at it this year. He's a good athlete, he's really coordinated, and is picking up on the events he's never done at a relatively proficient pace," Fraley said. "We're excited to get his feet wet in that process. It's a project become a heptathlete with all the disciplines that you have to learn, but we're excited to give him a shot and see how the first one shakes out."
Â
The Grizzlies had some breakout performances by newcomers and some veterans that rose to the expectations. They will now reach the midway point of the indoor season.
Â
It's a fast-moving schedule, which makes every competition experience that much more important. Â
Â
"This gives us a chance to continue to compete ourselves into competition shape. It's a big thing in any sport, you train and train and train but there is no substitute for competition speed and strength," Fraley said. "Those are things you have to establish throughout any season, so this is opportunity number two for us to get into real race and meet shape."
Â
The men had some great performances, including Teagun Holycross in the sprints and Jason Upton across jumps and sprints. They are bringing a large group of sprinters to Moscow this weekend on the men's side, highlighted by nine entrants in the 200 with plenty of 60 and 400 meter runners as well.
Â
They also have a good blend of youth and experience in the pole vault, where senior Zane Johnson and freshman Kevin Swindler have both had excellent starts to their indoor seasons.
Â
The women started well during the indoor season on the field side of things with senior Ariel Clark winning the weight throw with a PR and defending outdoor Big Sky champion Erin Wilde taking the crown at the Spokane Indoor Championship in high jump.
Â
Pole vault will be a deep event for the women as well, and the sprints saw some impressive performances from newcomers Tara Ohlwiler and Jayel Dovichak.
Â
"I think that we had a really good showing from the newcomers last week that kind of solidified some spots to get another opportunity this week," Fraley said. "And I'm just really looking forward to some of our upperclassmen who are in good shape and ready to go, just seeing them improve their marks and progress through the season."
