Montana heads to Bozeman to face Montana State, Wyoming
1/25/2024 10:34:00 AM | Men's Track and Field, Women's Track and Field
Montana track and field returns to action for the third consecutive week this Friday as they head to Bozeman for the Bobcat Challenge. The meet will feature athletes from Montana State, Wyoming, and Montana.
Â
It's the third straight week with an indoor meet, and also brings Montana to a third venue as they go to Bozeman's Worthington Arena. The Grizzlies have made some great strides, which included 29 different PRs at the Lauren McCluskey Memorial meet last weekend.
Â
They are looking to continue that trajectory, while also giving some more athletes a chance at the Bozeman meet.
Â
"This is a full team participation meet, so it's a great opportunity for some of our younger athletes who didn't travel to the last two to get in and compete and show their progress at this point," head coach Doug Fraley said. "It is week three, and so some of our athletes will go and compete in their normal events, others will either hold out because they've had two really good weeks of competition and are a little bit tired or dinged up."
Â
This meet will have a different feel to it compared to the previous two as it features just three total teams. Instead of the large fields and long days that Montana experienced at the previous two meets, it will be a more intimate setting.
Â
The meet will all be contained to Friday. It begins with field events at 10:00 a.m. while races will start at 11:00 a.m. The final event will be the 4x400m relays at 1:50 p.m.
Â
"We're looking forward to the meet. It's unique. Most indoor meets these days are big invitationals that have 12-20 schools," Fraley said. "This is a three-team invitational with Montana State and Wyoming. The great thing about this meet is all three teams are very well rounded as far as having entries in all events and programs that believe in covering all of the events in track and field."
Â
The meet will use the dual scoring system with individual events giving out points to the top finishers in a 5-3-2-1 format while relays will be 5-3 scoring. The overall team score is not the main concern of Fraley, but he said when looking at the other teams he sees fields that should be competitive.
Â
Montana State is predicted to be a top three team in the Big Sky according to the preseason polls, and Wyoming is a good competitor in the Mountain West Conference.
Â
"You're definitely paying attention to the strengths of the other teams and in each event area there are excellent entries," Fraley said. "There is not one event in this track meet that is what I would call weak. It's very exciting for us to go into a meet like that knowing we're going to get very good competition in every event across the board."
Â
Montana is mixing things up a bit in the meet, giving season debuts to several athletes, including a number of distance runners, while moving some athletes to different events on the track in an attempt to stay fresh and work on different skills.
Â
It's a smaller meet and Montana may have different events listed than normal, but for Fraley the focus is still all on focusing up and taking steps in the right direction.
"The kids that we are taking we are looking for continued progress whether they are competing in their main events or whether we're dropping them into another event for experience," Fraley said. "It's a contest, and any time you go into an athletic contest you want your team improving and showing signs of progress. This week is no different."
Â
Montana had five event wins last week in Idaho, and five more the previous week in Spokane. The strengths of the team are starting to come into focus, while across the board Montana's marks continue to improve.
Â
This week ends the busiest stretch of the schedule. Montana will have next week off before heading back to Spokane on Feb. 9-10. They will have one more off week following that before ending indoor season at the Big Sky Championships Feb. 22-24 in Spokane.
Â
"This is week three and so we're looking forward to going to this meet, competing well, and then having the following weekend off," Fraley said. "Obviously, there are still two opportunities left before that for some of the final spots, but the majority of the roster has solidified itself. It will be good after three weeks in a row to have a weekend off, do a final prep at the next Spokane meet, another weekend off, and then hopefully peak at the Big Sky Championship."
