Griz face pair of road tests
10/16/2024 9:41:00 AM | Volleyball
As the midway point of the conference season approaches, the Montana volleyball team faces an important test on the road this week. The Grizzlies will face off against winless Northern Arizona in Flagstaff before taking on Northern Colorado in a rematch of the Big Sky opener.
Â
The Grizzlies and Bears met just three weeks ago in a 3-1 victory for Northern Colorado. Montana battled tough in that one, losing the total point spread by just one as they outblocked Northern Colorado while also putting up their best serving performance of the year with 11 aces.
Â
The offense from Northern Colorado, which ranks near the top of the league, hit .258 in that match. It started an impressive run for the Bears through the first three weeks of league play as they currently are tied for first with a 4-1 record.
Â
Before that rematch, however, Montana has an opportunity to create some distance in the league standings between themselves and ninth-place Northern Arizona. The Lumberjacks enter the week 0-5 in league play after an impressive 7-4 non-conference schedule.
Â
The Grizzlies are currently in eighth in the Big Sky standings. They already have a victory over last-place Idaho, sweeping them at home last Thursday. The top eight teams in the league make the postseason, meaning that while there is still a lot of volleyball to be played this year, Thursday night will be important for positioning at the midway point.
Â
The top seven teams in the conference are all above .500 at the moment, setting up several intriguing matchups over the weekend. Northern Colorado is tied for the league lead with Idaho State and Sacramento State as all three teams are 4-1.
Â
Behind them are four teams with two losses each. Montana and Montana State are the only two teams to have played six matches through three weeks, as they still await the first rivalry game of the season next week in Missoula.
Â
Both matches will be streamed on ESPN+.

CLARK'S QUEST FOR HISTORY
Â
Paige Clark is rising the all-time ranks at Montana in several categories, and she has entered the top 10 in program history in recent weeks.
Clark has 1,176 career kills, which is the 8th most in program history. She recently passed Griz legend and Canadian national team member Jaimie Thibeault, who played from 2007-10, and Erin Adams (1996-2000). Clark trails Karen Goff by 79 kills for 7th.
She is also closing in on 10th in program history at 125 career service aces with 28 already this season. She needs three more to tie Linde Eidenberg for 10th.  She has averaged at least 0.30 all four years at Montana, including a career best 0.46 per set in 2024.
Clark is the first Grizzly since Amy Roberts in 2011 to reach the 1,000-kill mark. She is only the third player to reach the mark with all four of her years in the 25-point scoring era, and just the sixth player since 2000 to reach 1,000.
The senior is also a three-time All-Big Sky selection. She is just the sixth Grizzly in program history to make three separate All-Conference teams, and is looking to join Jaimie Thibeault (2007-10) as the only four-timers in school history.
