The Montana softball team dropped games to New Mexico and Grand Canyon on Friday as the Grizzlies opened play at GCU's Purple Classic in Phoenix.
Â
Montana lost 3-2 to New Mexico and 13-0 to Grand Canyon in five innings to fall to 5-12 on the season.
Â
Riding a two-game winning streak, the Grizzlies got up 2-0 on the Lobos before New Mexico rallied for the one-run victory.
Â
Montana scored first in the bottom of the second, with Madison Tarrant leading off with a triple to left-center and Jessica Stanfield driving her in with a one-out single to right.
Â
The Grizzlies went up 2-0 in the bottom of the fourth on Riley Peschek's first collegiate home run.
Â
That gave starter Rylee Rehbein, who entered the game with a scoreless inning streak of 12 1/3, a cushion to work with, and she took that lead into the top of the fifth.
Â
After getting a leadoff out to extend her scoreless streak to a program-record 16 2/3 innings, she gave up a walk, then a game-tying two-run home run.
Â
New Mexico (5-15) followed with three consecutive singles to take its first lead of the game, 3-2.
Â
Montana put two runners on in the bottom of the fifth and had a runner on in the bottom of the seventh, but the Grizzlies could not plate the equalizer.
Â
Rehbein took the loss to drop to 2-2. She allowed seven hits, struck out six and walked three. Tarrant led Montana with a pair of hits.
Â
In Montana's second game, Grand Canyon (13-4) scored five runs in the bottom of the first off starter Emmalyn Brinka, eight in the bottom of the fourth off reliever Grace Haegele, only two of them earned.
Â
Lopes starter Meghan Golden allowed one hit through four innings, needing just 47 pitches while facing 14 batters. Alina Satcher pitched the fifth.
Â
Montana had just two hits in the game, a single by Presley Jantzi in the first and a single by Hannah Jablonski in the fifth.
Â
Montana will face Toledo (5-5) at 9 a.m. and Pacific (4-12) at 11:30 a.m. on Saturday.
