Montana's men's and women's tennis teams have both been recognized for their work in the classroom by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association, the ITA announced earlier this week.
With a Grizzly Athletics department-high 3.75 combined GPA for the men and an equally impressive 3.59 for the women in the 2023-24 academic year, both squads earned ITA All-Academic Teams honors.
A combined 12 players – eight for the men, four for the women – also earned individual honors, being named ITA Scholar-Athletes.
Individual Scholar-Athlete standards are higher than academic all-conference standards with eligible players needing at least a 3.5 GPA (on a 4.0 scale) in an academic year to qualify. ITA All-Academic Teams must have a combined 3.2 GPA or above among eligible letterwinners.
For the sixth-straight year head coach Jason Brown's men's tennis team earned the coveted Dusten Hollist Award given to the team with the highest cumulative GPA in the athletic department at the annual Grizzly Scholar-Athlete Awards Banquet in April.
Sophomores Tom Bittner and Baltazar Wiger-Nordas were two of the top players in the Grizzly lineup this season and proved themselves in the classroom as both ITA Scholar-Athletes and the two male recipients of this year's UM President's Award with 4.0 GPAs.
Other Scholar-Athletes for the men include Dragos Bucurescu, Guillermo Martin, Moritz Stoeger, Eivind Tandberg, Jake Watkins, and Chris Zhang.
Head coach Steve Ascher's women's squad earned ITA All-Academic Team honors for now the 13th time in program history, with four players being named ITA Scholar-Athletes.
Seniors Ivayla Mitkova and Maria Goheen, as well as sophomore Shivika Agrawal and freshman Kelsey Phillips all earned Scholar-Athlete honors.
In 2024, 1,059 Division I men and 1,573 women were named an ITA Scholar-Athletes nationwide. 255 women's program and 176 men's teams were awarded the All-Academic Team distinction.
