Montana continues indoor season in Idaho
1/22/2025 4:16:00 PM | Men's Track and Field, Women's Track and Field
The season rolls on for the Montana track & field team as they head to Moscow, Idaho this weekend for the Lauren McCluskey Memorial meet hosted by the University of Idaho. It's the second straight week of action, and brings Montana to the halfway point of the indoor season.
The meet begins on Friday morning with multis at 10:30 a.m. (MT). The main portion of events begin at 4:30 p.m. on Friday night, and the action resumes Saturday morning at 10:00 a.m. It will be streamed on ESPN+.
Montana competed well at the Spokane Indoor Challenge last week and knocked off the rust after a month-long winter break. The Grizzlies will now head to the Kibbie Dome to compete on the 300m Mondo Super X Performance track.
The flat track will be very similar to what the Grizzlies will encounter at the Big Sky Championships in Flagstaff, Ariz. at the end of February.
"For us, that's really important," head coach Doug Fraley said. "It's going to be our only opportunity in the regular season to run on a track that is similar to the one in Flagstaff. We will definitely use this as an opportunity to run people in their main events as far as the track events go to get used to running on a bigger, flat track. It will be a key experience, especially for a lot of our newcomers that haven't run sprint races on a flat track."
The Grizzlies will have seven freshmen competing on the men's side and five on the women's side. It's a class of athletes that have impressed already as Grizzlies, and they will get their chance for some Big Sky prep this weekend.
"We're looking forward to getting into that venue," Fraley said. "It's one of my favorite venues personally to have a track meet, to watch a track meet, and it's the next step in the progression of the indoor season."
Montana had five event winners in Spokane last weekend. Erin Wilde continued her dominance in the women's high jump, and will continue to threaten a 31-year old school record as the indoor season continues. She had three attempts at the record last Saturday.
It wasn't the only school record in danger in Spokane. Freshman Braden Ankeny, in his first collegiate 200m, tied the indoor program record of 21.51 set by David Blair in 2000. The freshman will be one to keep an eye on for the Griz as the season progresses.
Cooper Hewett, Montana's record-holder in the 60m, started his season well in Spokane as he looks to progress through the regular season towards a defense of his Big Sky title. On the track, Montana will compete many of its top athletes in their primary events.
"We will work kids pretty hard this weekend because we'll have the next weekend off," Fraley said. "It will give us a two week training block to get ready for the next one in Spokane, so for all the kids that are healthy we will be doing everything that we feel like we need to do for them event-wise."
The Grizzlies will have a good venue to compete in and will have some great competition for this point in the year. Eastern Washington, Sacramento State, and the host Idaho team will be among the fields.
It will give them a good measuring stick at the midway point of the regular season. Montana will have two more meets in Spokane in February before heading to the Big Sky Championships.
"We feel like we're going to a great venue to perform, and the competition is really good," Fraley said. "It's a lot of really good Big Sky competition and it's great to get in and mix it up with some of those teams because it gives us a really good read on where we're at in comparison to other teams in our league."
