The Montana women's basketball team, coming off a road trip to Oregon and Washington, will face another tough opponent on Saturday when it takes on South Dakota State in a neutral-site game in Rapid City, S.D.
The game will tip off at 6 p.m. at The Monument.
The Lady Griz are 1-2 and have not played in a game with a margin closer than 30 points yet, defeating NCAA Division II Seattle Pacific in their opener, then falling in both games of last week's Big Ten road trip.
The Jackrabbits are 3-0 and ranked atop the CollegeInsider.com top 25 mid-major poll after playing in their 14th NCAA Tournament since 2008-09 last season.
SDSU is outside the top 25 but among teams receiving votes in both the AP and WBCA national polls.
Coverage: Saturday's game will be streamed on the Summit League Network. Ace Sauerwein's local call can be heard on KGRZ (1450 AM/92.7 FM) and the Varsity Network.
At a glance (Montana): After opening the season with an 81-44 home win over Seattle Pacific, the Lady Griz played at Oregon and Washington on Saturday afternoon and Monday night.
Montana fell behind Oregon 44-18 at the half and lost 90-47 as the Ducks shot 51.5 percent and forced 23 Lady Griz turnovers.
Montana's offensive bright spot in the game was senior point guard Mack Konig, who scored 23 points on 10-of-18 shooting. Her 23 points were six off her career best and the 10th time in her career she has scored 20 or more points.
Avery Waddington hit a pair of early 3-pointers and had six points in the first quarter, but she was held to just two points the rest of the way to finish with eight.
On Monday night in Seattle, Montana, which shot 6 for 30 (.200) in the opening 20 minutes, fell behind the Huskies 42-19 at the half.
The Lady Griz went 9 for 22 (.409) from the 3-point line in the second half and scored 37 points over the final two periods.
In its two Division I games this season, Montana is averaging 51.5 points on 31.9 percent shooting and has gotten out-rebounded 95-54.
Konig, who made the six-player Preseason All-Big Sky team last month along with Waddington, averaged 17.0 points on 48.4 percent shooting against Oregon and Washington.
She is averaging 16.0 points through three games this season. She has shot 19 for 36 (.528) from the field, 3 for 5 (.600) from the 3-point line and has gone 7 for 8 (.875) from the free throw line.
After opening the season with 20 points against Seattle Pacific, Waddington scored eight at Oregon, 14 at Washington, going 4 for 7 from the 3-point line against the Huskies to match a career high for threes made.
The only other Lady Griz to reach double figures in scoring this season has been Butler transfer Jocelyn Land, who scored 10 at Washington. She hit a pair of 3-pointers and went 4 for 4 from the free throw line.
Oregon and Washington combined to score 102 points in the paint against Montana. The Lady Griz scored just 20 bench points in the two games and took nearly 60 percent (.586) of their shots from the 3-point line.
Monday's game at Washington came just hours after the Huskies were ranked No. 25 in the AP poll, Montana's first game against a ranked opponent since facing Michigan State last December in Florida.
It was Montana's 65th all-time game against a ranked opponent.
Konig has opened the season with scoring games of 14, 23 and 11 points. She has 55 games of 10 or more points in her Lady Griz career.
Konig became the 36th player in program history to reach 1,000 career points in the Big Sky championship game in Boise in March. She has already passed four players on that list this season and sits in 32nd with 1,055 points.
Waddington is 7 for 13 (.538) from the 3-point line through three games.
Because of the nature of its first three games, Montana has played all 14 of its players in each game this season.
At a glance (South Dakota State): The Jackrabbits lost a pair of key players off last year's team, Haleigh Timmer transferring to Oklahoma State and superb point guard Paige Meyer to graduation, but SDSU has kept humming along.
The Jackrabbits opened the season with a statement win, going to Creighton and winning comfortably 78-62 behind an excellent game from standout Brooklyn Meyer, who went for 33 points on 14-of-20 shooting.
Meyer had 22 points in South Dakota State's 79-65 home win over Rice, then added 24 points on 11-of-14 shooting in Tuesday's 91-60 home win over previously unbeaten Murray State.
Meyer, the Summit League Preseason Player of the Year, is averaging 26.3 points on 64.2 percent shooting through three games. She is averaging 8.7 rebounds and has 14 blocks.
Her 14 blocks lead the nation, her scoring average ranks seventh.
Sophomore Katie Vasecka is averaging 13.3 points on 55.6 percent shooting.
South Dakota State is averaging 82.7 points on 51.4 percent shooting through three games, with 40 assists against 28 turnovers.
The Jackrabbits went 25-3 last season, their losses coming against Duke, Georgia Tech and eventual national champion Connecticut in the second round of the NCAA Tournament. It was SDSU's 14th consecutive 20-win season.
South Dakota State has won 19 or more games every season since 2001-02, when it was still a Division II program. The Jackrabbits have played in either the WNIT or NCAA tournaments every season that had a postseason since 2006-07.
Not surprisingly, South Dakota State, which has gone 81-1 in Summit League games since 2020-21, was the overwhelming favorite in the league's preseason poll, followed by North Dakota State and Oral Roberts.
Head coach of the program since being named interim late in the 1999-2000 season is Aaron Johnston, who won a Division II national championship in 2002-03 and guided the program seamlessly from Division II national power to Division I mid-major power.
The nine-time Summit League Coach of the Year has a career record of 630-195.
Series history: The teams have met three times previously, including last season in Missoula as part of the Big Sky-Summit League Challenge.
The teams were in a one-point game with just over a minute to go before two Brooklyn Meyer free throws and a dagger 3-pointer from Timmer with 38 seconds left put the Jackrabbits up six. SDSU would go on to win 78-70.
South Dakota State defeated Montana 64-59 in Cancun in the 2008-09 season and 84-43 in the 2016-17 season in Iowa City.
Upcoming: Montana will host currently unbeaten BYU (2-0) on Wednesday, Nov. 19. The Cougars host Omaha on Thursday, Fresno State on Saturday before making their way to Missoula for their first road game of the season.
The game will tip off at 6 p.m. at The Monument.
