Gillman named Offensive MVP as Griz get 18 All-Big Sky Honorees
11/26/2025 10:38:00 AM | Football
Following a historic regular season the Montana Grizzlies received a historic haul of postseason all-conference honors, the Big Sky announced on Wednesday.
Montana started the year 11-0 for just the fourth time ever in 2025, and for the first time in over two decades a Grizzly has been named Big Sky Offensive Player of the Year with coaches around the conference tabbing running back Eli Gillman the league's MVP.
The Griz also had eight first team All-Big Sky selections (tied for the fourth most in program history) to go along with a league-high 17 players who earned 18 total all-conference nods on a first, second, or honorable mention list. All told, eight Grizzlies were named to first team, six were named second team, and four received an honorable mention.
Gillman now becomes Montana's first Big Sky Offensive MVP since quarterback John Edwards earned the honor in 2002. He's the seventh all-time Grizzly to win offensive MVP honors but is the only non-quarterback in program history to win the award. Considering UM's deep history of running backs, that's saying something.
In fact, Gillman now joins a rare group of just 13 running backs around the league to earn Offensive MVP honors since the Big Sky started handing out the award in 1974. He's also in elite company as one of just three players to be named Big Sky Freshman of the Year and go on to be named Offensive Player of the Year, joining Troy Andersen and Cooper Kupp in that distinction.
The junior from Dassel, Minn., has rushed for a career-high and Big Sky-best 1,261 yards so far this season – his second-straight 1,000-yard year. He currently leads the league in rushing yards per game (105.1), rushing touchdowns (17), overall scoring (9.5 ppg), and total points (114). He's posted six 100+ yard games and nine 80+ yard rushing games as the No. 8 overall rusher in the FCS, and he's done it all in a balanced offense that airs it out as much as sticking to the ground game.
With 3,398 yards in his career, Gillman is on the cusp of shattering Grizzly rushing records. He's currently fifth all-time at UM in total rushing yards and top three in program history in rushing TDs (45), total TDs (49), and points scored by a non-kicker (294).
This is the third All-Big Sky selection of his career. He was a second team running back in both 2023 and 2024 and was Big Sky Freshman of the Year and the Jerry Rice Award winner in '23. He's also a two-time Academic All-Big Sky pick.
Gillman joins seven other Grizzlies on the All-Big Sky first team alongside sophomore quarterback Keali'i Ah Yat, tight end Evan Shafer, tackle Cannon Panfiloff, and all-purpose player Michael Wortham on the offense. Defensively, end Hunter Peck and linebacker Peyton Wing both earned first team honors, while Butte native Tanner Huff was a first team pick on special teams.
Ah Yat (who was named a Payton Award finalist on Tuesday) has made Montana's Big Sky-best scoring offense go this season. Heding into the playoffs he leads the league in passing yards (3,154 – 4th in FCS), passing TDs (25), and points responsible for (192). A dual threat, he leads the Big Sky in total offense yards (3154), is No. 2 in Yds/completion (13), No. 3 in pass completion percentage (.687), Yds/attempt (9), and has the second-fewest interceptions in the Big Sky among QBs with 200-plus attempts at eight.
Shafer has been a force in Montana's ground game and productive in the passing game as well with 10 catches for 91 yards and two touchdowns this season, an average of 9.1 yards per catch. As one of the teams' strongest players, he's helped pave the way for the top rusher and passer in the conference.
Panfiloff has been equally impactful on UM's rushing and air attack. As the left tackle, UM's quarterbacks have only been sacked 19 times in 12 games this season, a rate of just 1.58 given up per game. That's the fewest by a team with a winning record in the Big Sky and tied for the fifth fewest at UM since 1991.
Wortham has done it all for Montana this season as one of Pro Football Focus' highest rated wide receivers in all D-I football and a finalist for the Payton Award. He concluded the regular season leading the Big Sky (3rd in FCS) in all-purpose yards with 156.6/game. The senior also leads league in combined kick returns (781 – 3rd FCS) as both a kickoff and punt return dynamo.
He was named FCS Offensive Player of the Week on Oct. 27 after leading Montana to a 49-35 road win at Sacraemento State with a hat trick of touchdowns and 238 all-purpose yards. He was UM's leader in rushing, receiving, and combined returns in that game, rushing for a season and game-high 89 yards and two touchdowns, catching five passes for 80 yards that included a 64-yard strike, and returning two kickoffs for 69 yards including a long of 44.
Wortham also received second-team all-conference honors at receiver where he's currently top 4 in the Big Sky in receiving TDs (7), top 6 in receiving yards (822), and receptions/game (5.18), and is a two-time Big Sky Player of the Week. He's now a three-time All-Big Sky honoree after earning second team honors in 2023 and first team honors in 2024 at Eastern Washington.
Peck earned first team defensive honors in a standout senior year at UM after transferring from NAIA Carroll College in the offseason where he was a two-time All-American and the Frontier Conference Defensive Player of the Year. He currently leads UM in sacks with 4.5 and TFLs with 6.5 and has logged 4 QB hurries and one forced fumble to go along with 33 total tackles at D-end.
Wing also earned first team defensive honors at linebacker. The junior was a leader on Montana's Big Sky-best red zone D (.732), No. 2 scoring D (23.5 ppg), rushing D (133.5 ypg), and first down D (212) as well. He currently leads the team in interceptions (3) and QB hurries (4) and is 3rd on team in total tackles (59) and solo tackles (29). He logged three sacks at Sac State to earn Big Sky weekly honors and had 5+ tackles in 7 of 12 games. Wing was a second team All-Big Sky pick as a sophomore last year at Portland State.
Huff, a senior from Butte, is a deserved first team pick on UM's kickoff and punt cover units. He's been a major part of UM's No. 1 Big Sky kickoff return defensive unit that has allowed less than 19 yards per return this season. He's posted 21 tackles (15 solo) primarily on special teams and recovered a special teams fumble as well. Huff was named the Hauck Family Special Teams Award Winner following his junior year in 2024.
Second Team selections for Montana this year include Wortham at receiver and lineman Liam Brown on the offense. Defensively, Solomon Tuliaupupu and Missoula native TJ Rausch earned a nod with Rausch landing on the second team for a second-straight year. Drew Deck also earned a second-team spot as the league's top punt returner with 240 yards, as did long/short snapper Grayson Pibal, who has now delivered 415 consecutive snaps and gone 43-straight games without a bad punt, PAT, or field goal snap.
Earning All-Big Sky Honorable Mentions are Jerry Rice Award finalist for Freshman of the Year Brooks Davis at receiver, as well as a pair of sophomores in D-end Jake Mason and linebacker Caleb Otlewski. Reliable kicker/punter Ty Morrison was also an honorable mention.
The Big Sky all-conference teams were selected by the league's coaches, who could not vote for their own players. A player needed to receive at least three votes to earn an honorable mention.
