A win in the rubber-match was not to be for the Montana women's tennis team as the Portland State Vikings beat the Griz for the second time this season at the Peak Racquet Club in Missoula on Sunday 6-1.
Montana was shorthanded against the Vikings, playing the conference dual without the guidance of 17-year head coach Steve Ascher, who missed the match due to an illness.
The Griz started slow against PSU with a loss in the doubles round followed by singles losses on five of the six singles courts in an effort to avenge a 4-2 loss to the Vikings in early January on a neutral court at the University of Oregon.
This time around, Olivia Moir and Kelsey Phillips earned a 6-2 win on court three doubles, but losses on courts one and two gave PSU the 1-0 team advantage in the early going.
Senior Grace Haugen earned Montana's only singles win of the afternoon, beating PSU No. 1 Nika Beukers in straight sets 6-4, 7-5, to improve to 7-3 on the season and proving she's once again among the top players in the Big Sky.
Piper Freeman won her first set over Kasumi Hirayama on court four, but the PSU visitor roared back in the second and third set to leave Missoula with a 2-6, 6-3, 6-2 win. Phillips also pulled out a set win, capturing momentum to win the second frame, but eventually falling to Hana Abdelhamid 3-6, 7-5, 3-6.
Montana falls to 3-9 on the year and 1-2 in Big Sky play in the loss while Portland State improves to 4-6 and 3-2 in conference action.
The Griz now return to the road for a pair of matches at Idaho State, facing the Bengals in a conference dual and Utah Tech in a neutral site meeting on March 21 and 22 before heading to Northern Arizona to take on the Lumberjacks in Flagstaff on March 29.
Montana will play its last three regular season matches of the year in Missoula after that, Hosting Idaho, Montana State, and Eastern Washington in the month of April.
