Montana to honor seniors at final home meet
4/24/2025 1:16:00 PM | Men's Track and Field, Women's Track and Field
The Montana track and field program will honor 19 seniors before racing starts up on Saturday as they host the final home meet of the season. The Montana Open begins Friday afternoon at 1:00 p.m. with the hammer and javelin events with the main portion of the meet on Saturday.
Â
The Grizzly seniors will be recognized at 11:50 a.m. on Saturday with an on-track ceremony. The group includes a pair of Big Sky Champions, six All-Conference honorees, and is responsible for five different Montana program records.
Â
The group spent a majority of their careers under the leadership of head coach Doug Fraley, helping the program through a transition phase and into a new era. It resulted in the best indoor Big Sky Championship finishes since 2014 for the men and 2017 for the women.
Â
They will now get one last opportunity to put on the Montana uniforms in front of the home crowd.
Â
"We're really looking forward to honoring our seniors Saturday at the meet," Fraley said. "There are a lot of those athletes that have had a tremendous impact on our program in the time that they have been there. They are very deserving of this honor and we're looking forward to showcasing them on Saturday."
Â
The regular season is winding down for Montana with just three more meets left on the schedule. In less than a month, the Grizzlies will be in Sacramento for the Big Sky Outdoor Championships, meaning every meet is important in fine tuning the details.
Â
After a limited number of athletes competed last week at a trio of meets in California, the Montana Open will be a great opportunity for the rest of the roster to compete hard in the closing stretches of the season.
Â
For those that competed hard down in California, it will be a chance to stay sharp but also refresh the legs and arms.
Â
"We're always happy to have a home meet and to be able to get the full team involved," Fraley said. "We will compete those kids that didn't travel hard this week in their main events, and we will be a little more selective for the kids we took to California that competed hard out there."
Â
Montana is looking to recreate the success that they had indoors this season, and have put together a strong regular season up to this point. The women currently have 10 athletes ranked inside the top 100 in the regional rankings, while the men have nine.
Â
Whitney Morrison (heptathlon) and Matthew Hockett (javelin), both of whom will be honored before their final meet at home, are currently leading the Big Sky Conference in their respective events.
Â
Montana also has 22 men and 19 women in the top 10 of the Big Sky Conference performance lists entering this weekend.
Â
They will look to keep things rolling this weekend and into the Bengal Invitational next week in Pocatello, Idaho.
Â
"We're in the home stretch of the regular season and this is another important meet in the lineup that we need to continue to get work done, continue to fix things, and continue to improve," Fraley said. "From the time you reach mid-April on is really the downhill run to the conference meet. As with any meet in the progression of the outdoor season, we're looking for improvements this week."
Â
There has been a lot of success at the top of the roster this year, but a meet like the Montana Open is also critical for the depth of the Grizzlies this season. Fraley only has a limited number of spots on the roster for the conference championship.
Â
This meet can help a student-athlete make the case that they belong on the flight down to Sacramento, and it can also help to get them on the bus to Pocatello next weekend. There is a lot at stake for every member of Montana's roster.
Â
"It's an opportunity for a lot of athletes on our team who are either on the fringe or just outside the bubble to continue their seasons," Fraley said. "Every meet counts for a lot of those kids on our roster, so whether it's competing well enough to be able to go to the Pocatello meet next week or to solidify their position on the conference roster, there is a lot of importance in a meet like this."
Â
The field will be similar to what Montana saw at the Al Manuel Invitational at the end of March. Montana State will make the trip over the Continental Divide, and several NAIA schools in Montana will be in Missoula.
Â
The Grizzlies will go from Pocatello to the Tom Gage Classic in Bozeman on May 9. After that, Montana heads to the Big Sky Conference Championships in Sacramento from May 14-17.
