Three school records fall in Spokane
1/17/2026 7:57:00 PM | Men's Track and Field, Women's Track and Field
The expectations for the Montana track and field program heading to Spokane were to get off to a solid start to the regular season after a month-long break. They blew those expectations out of the water on Saturday by breaking three school records in an impressive season debut.
Â
Tara Ohlwiler, Callie Wilson, and Karsen Beitz all broke the program marks at The Podium in Spokane as part of an impressive overall day for the Grizzlies. Ohlwiler and Beitz extended their own school records in the women's 60m and men's 200m. Wilson ran the 200m for the first time in her collegiate career and shattered an 18-year record in an incredible debut.
Â
The results from Spokane gave head coach Doug Fraley a clear message that his team was putting in the work during the holiday break.
Â
"We had a great portion of our team get work done during the break. You can' t come back and have these types of performances unless you've been putting the work in while you were away," Fraley said. "I think that's the thing that I'm most proud of is our team's work ethic through the break."
Â
Ohlwiler started the day off in record-setting fashion for Montana. The sprint queen of the Big Sky Conference already owned the 60m record, but extended on her own mark by running a 7.50 time in the prelims.
Â
She qualified in the top spot and went on to win the finals with a time of 7.53.
Â
Ohlwiler wasn't the only women's sprinter to have a record setting day. Wilson didn't run the 200m in her collegiate debut in Bozeman in early December, running the distance at the collegiate level for the first time on Saturday afternoon.
Â
Wilson has already threatened the 60m record. She did more than threaten Loni Perkins-Judisch's 2008 record in the 200m. Wilson jumped out to a good start and flew past the competition, running a time of 24.10 to win the event. It broke the previous school record by 0.29 seconds.
Â
Beitz started his day with a second place finish in the men's 60m sprint but left his mark at the 200m distance. Beitz broke his own record by one-hundredth of a second , running a 21.41 time to finish as the top collegiate performer.
Â
"Breaking three school records in the first regular season meet is outstanding. Those are just really, really good performances for the middle of January," Fraley said. "I'm really proud of that group."
Â
The encouraging thing for Fraley is the way all three athletes broke the school records indicates that they have plenty more left in the tank for the rest of the year.
Â
"The thing that I would say about all three school records is they were done very smoothly," Fraley said. "You weren't necessarily expecting the times to be as fast as they were because all three looked so smooth through the race. It really bodes well for us moving forward that they can be smooth in week one and still run at that level."
Â
It wasn't just those three perorm Montana won 15 events at the Spokane Indoor Challenge, getting victories on the track, in the jumps, and in the throws.
Â
"Team-wide I thought we had really good performances," Fraley said. "There were several event wins and top threes, so all-in-all it was a very successful first outing for the whole team. It gives us some markers to build on as we move forward through the regular season."
Â
The men got wins in both throws events. Freshman Astin Brown continued his strong start to his collegiate career with a win in the shot put. Brown's mark of 53-10.25 by nearly a foot over Eastern Washington's Cort Gebbers.
Â
Donaven Humphries picked up the win in the men's weight throw with a mark of 57-3.
Â
The Grizzly men also had three wins in the jumps. Patrick Kremer won the men's long jump with a mark of 23-0.5 and finished second in the high jump at 6-9.5. Kevin Swindler matched his PR in the pole vault with a vault of 16-8.75.
Â
Luke Mest won the 5,000m with a time of 14:35.51.
Â
The women had wins on the track from Libby Hartz with a time of 2:23.22 in the 800m and Kayla Ingraham with a time of 17:31.27 in the 5,000m. Jayel Dovichak had the fastest time in the 60-meter hurdles prelims but didn't race in the final.
Â
Erin Wilde continued her dominant career in the women's high jump with yet another win in the event. Wilde jumped 5-10.75 to claim the title in Spokane.
Â
Scout Nadeau had a PR in the women's weight throw with a mark of 54-6.5 to get yet another win for the Grizzlies.
Â
"We had a lot of really good performances," Fraley said. "I think this is going to give us some confidence to move forward through the regular season. We have a bunch of kids that are really excited about the process that we go through weekly to get to the competition faze of it. All-in-all, a great start."
