Wilson breaks two school records, runs 3rd fastest 200 in Big Sky history
1/24/2026 7:26:00 PM | Men's Track and Field, Women's Track and Field
Freshman Callie Wilson shattered a pair of Montana school records in an impressive individual performance at the Bobcat Challenge in Bozeman this weekend. The freshman won the women's 60m and 200m in record-breaking time to highlight a great overall meet for the Grizzlies.
Â
Karsen Beitz improved on his own program-best in the men's 200m on Friday night to join Wilson in the record breaking.
Â
The meet featured Montana State and Idaho State, two teams in the top half of the Big Sky, along with Wyoming out of the Mountain West. In some impressive fields, the Grizzlies still won five individual events on the women's side and five on the men's side.
Â
"Great teamwide effort," head coach Doug Fraley said. "We had standout performances in all event areas on the field and on the track. That's what we want to be developing as we go through the season is not just the top people getting better, but team-wide improving marks to solid Big Sky levels. I feel like we hit that in every event area this weekend."
Â
Wilson set a record in her first collegiate 200m. She blew her own record away and ran one of the best races in the history of the Big Sky Conference on Friday night in Bozeman at the Bobcat Challenge.
Â
Wilson ran a 23.49 second race to win the meet by nearly a full second and put her name in Griz and Big Sky Conference history. She's now nearly a second faster than the next closest Grizzly in program history with her new time.
Â
The freshman is also 3rd in Big Sky Conference history with her new time, and now ranks 13th in the entire NCAA in the women's 200m.
Â
It's the second straight week that Wilson has set a program record, but she didn't stop there.
Â
On Saturday, Wilson took another school record off the board, this time in the women's 60m. Running the event for just the second time this season, Wilson blew away the field in the prelims with a time of 7.36 to break her teammate Tara Ohlwiler's record.
Â
Wilson would go on to win the final with a time of 7.37 as she now owns the two fastest times in program history.
Â
"She had a tremendous weekend," Fraley said. "We knew coming in that she was really talented out of high school and its fun watching her get into a college program and really working on things the way she has. She's done a really good job going through the process as a freshman and let it all show this weekend how talented that young lady is."
Â
Wilson wasn't alone in the double-win, record-breaking weekend department. Men's sprinter and a Missoula product Karsen Beitz also broke a Grizzly program record for the second straight week.
Â
Beitz won the men's 200m with a time of 21.35. He had the record entering the year, beat it last week, and now goes even lower with his time in Bozeman. He already had the fastest time in the Big Sky Conference this season but improved upon it with an impressive run in Bozeman.
Â
Beitz may not have broken a record in the 60m on Saturday, but he ran the second fastest time in school history on his way to a win in the event. He qualified for the finals with the fastest prelim time at 6.80.
Â
He improved upon that in the finals, running a time of 6.74 that trails only Cooper Hewett in Montana school history. Beitz won the event and has now improved on his time in the 60m in five straight races.
Â
"He had a really good weekend with the 200m last night and then going through the prelims and the finals in a very good field in the final," Fraley said.
Â
The record breakers weren't the only Grizzlies to pick up event wins for Montana. In fact, the winning started for Montana on Friday afternoon when the multis competed for the first time this season.
Â
Brooke Stayner, who redshirted last season, returned in impressive fashion in the women's pentathlon. The junior from Missoula won three of the five events in the women's pentathlon and set four PRs along the way to score 3,789. It's a new personal best score for Stayner in the event.
Â
She opened with a PR time of 8.79 in the 60mH and followed it up with a high jump of 5-6.5, another personal best. She finished second in both the shot put (34-2.25) and long jump (17-4.75) with new personal best marks before closing things out with a win in the 800m.
Â
Kensey Gault finished 4th in the pentathlon with a score of 3,368.
Â
On the men's side, sophomore Oliver Simianer finished 4th in the heptathlon with a score of 4,385.
Â
"I feel like we had outstanding performances in the multis this weekend," Fraley said. "Brooke had a lifetime best in the pentathlon. She came back on Saturday after doing five events on Friday and ran two good hurdle races to make it to the finals. The multis group did a really nice job in the first one of the year. It's an area that we lean on, and our kids did a great job in that respect."
Â
Erin Wilde won for the 11th straight time in the women's high jump. The senior from Whitefish cleared 5-7 for the win. She was pushed by Grizzly freshman Jaidyn Pevey, who finished 3rd by clearing 5-5.
Â
Luke Mest joined Beitz in the winner's circle on the men's side on Friday night with a victory in the 3,000m race. Mest ran a personal best time of 8:43.16 for the win in a competitive field of distance runners from Montana State, Idaho State, and Wyoming.
Â
Truman Thompson also picked up a very impressive win in the men's 800m. Distance is a specialty for both Montana State and Idaho State but Thompson ran past the Bobcats and Bengals and held on with a time of 1:51.23.
Â
Thompson's time is the 28th fastest in the country this season and the fastest in the Big Sky Conference.
Â
"He ran today indoors right at what his outdoor PR was from last May and beat a really, really tough field," Fraley said. "That kind of performance, watching him finish off the race coming from behind and taking the lead and not giving it up, was really tremendous progress and we're certainly proud of that effort."
Â
Mikenna Ells won the women's 400m with a new personal best time of 54.41. The Whitefish product has dealt with injuries over the last year but is returning to full health and cut down her PR time by a full second on Saturday to give the Montana women's sprint group wins in the 60m, 200m, and 400m.
Â
The final individual victory for Montana came from a freshman out of Butte. Sam Henderson topped the men's high jump field with a season-best clearance of 6-8.75. The freshman also finished 2nd in the triple jump by going up and over 48 feet.
Â
Jayel Dovichak continues to inch closer to her own coaches record in the women's 60-meter hurdles. She finished 2nd in Bozeman with a new personal best time of 8.53 that is just .05 away from Lindsey Hall's record.
Â
The competition improved in Bozeman but so did the Grizzlies, a welcome sign for Fraley that his program and athletes aren't afraid of the moment.
Â
"We're trying to recruit the type of athletes that step up when the competition is at its best," Fraley said. "This was a big step up in competition and intensity from last week and I thought our team's performances proved they were up to the task in a lot of areas this week."
Â
Montana will now have a week off before returning to Bozeman on Feb. 6 for the Carignan Classic.
Â
"We've had a good progression through the first two meets and now it will be nice to have a week off so we can have a good training block before the next time coming back to Bozeman," Fraley said. "We will get rested and recovered and hit the appropriate training to check boxes to continue to get better as we move into February."
