Griz track and field heads to Bozeman on Friday
2/4/2026 3:31:00 PM | Men's Track and Field, Women's Track and Field
It's been a record setting start to the 2026 indoor season for Doug Fraley's track and field program at Montana. The only thing that has slowed them down has been a week away from competition, but the Grizzlies return to action this Friday in Bozeman at the Carignan Classic.
Â
It's a one-day meet held inside the Kennedy-Stark Athletic Center with events beginning at 2:00 p.m. and running until nearly 8:00 p.m.
Â
"It was great to have a week off where we could really get into some comprehensive training that you can't do when you're going to meets two weeks in a row," Fraley said. "We feel like we got a great training block in last week, the kids got ample rest and recovery, and everyone came out to practice feeling good and performing well so we're excited to meet week."
Â
The first two weeks of the season saw several Montana program records fall. Callie Wilson broke both the 60m and 200m school records on the Grizzlies' last trip to Bozeman and Karsen Beitz knocked off his own record in the men's 200m.
Â
Wilson is the Big Sky's leader in both events where she has broken records and currently ranks 38th in the NCAA in the women's 200m with an adjusted time of 23.56.
Â
The Grizzlies have several other Big Sky leaders on the women's side. Erin Wilde has the top mark in the men's high jump at 5-10.75, a jump that also ranks 31st in the NCAA this year. Mikenna Ells has the top 400m time at 54.52.
Â
The Grizzly men have 16 athletes ranked inside the top 10 in the conference. Beitz ranks 3rd in the 200m and 4th in the 60m. Braden Ankeny is right behind him in the 200m in 5th place in the league, and Truman Thompson's impressive 800m run two weeks ago (1:50.61, adj.) has him in 4th place in a loaded Big Sky event.
Â
There are several other Grizzlies in the thick of it on the conference level, including Kevin Swindler in the men's pole vault. Swindler ranks 2nd after nearly breaking Montana's indoor school record with a mark of 16-8.75.
Â
There will be plenty of competition to once again bring out the best in the Grizzlies in Bozeman. They will face off with the Bobcats and several different NAIA schools from the Treasure State, but also included in the fields will be athletes from Utah State of the Mountain West.
Â
"It's great because MSU is there, the Montana schools will be there, but we're very excited because Utah State will be coming and that's a very good program that we never get to see," Fraley said. "It's very exciting going against a very good Mountain West school that matches up well with us in our strong events."
Â
Fraley is hopeful that the team has used the week off to get to a place where their best is in front of them in February. They open up championship month back in Bozeman at a place that led to fast times two weeks ago.
Â
"We're in February now. We've told our team that we've progressed well, but the rubber meets the road in the month of February," Fraley said. "You are going to see conference marks start to explode because the emphasis this month is to get to Big Sky Championship level. We're already seeing that in the results from last weekend."
Â
Indeed, Montana ended last week with nearly 50 athletes ranked in the top 10 of the Big Sky Conference performance lists. After a week off with many other Big Sky schools competing, the number dropped to 37.
Â
The Grizzlies will now get their chance to fight back with four weeks until the Big Sky Championship on Feb. 26-28.
Â
"The thing you have to know about February is if you are not getting better, you are losing ground," Fraley said. "Our goal these next two meets is to get ourselves sharpened and performing at a high level before we go to the Big Sky Conference meet and positioning our team where we need to be going into that Championship."
