MISSOULA – The Montana men's tennis team continued its fantastic fall tournament season with a pair of dual wins and a sweep of the doubles competition at the Colorado Cup hosted by the University of Denver over the weekend.
Montana was one of four teams competing in the round-robin tourney, facing regional powerhouse programs Air Force, Denver and Gonzaga in a hidden-dual format that saw each team square off in singles and doubles.
The Griz rose to the challenge, sweeping the doubles point in all three matches and coming out on top in singles against the Falcons and Zags for dual wins. Montana finished the tournament with 16 total match victories, collecting 10 singles wins and six doubles.
"These hidden duals here in Denver were a great way to wrap up the fall. We played some really good programs in Air Force, Denver and Gonzaga, and they gave us some great tests. We won the doubles point every day and held our own in singles. Denver got the best of us overall, but we won the majority of the matches against Gonzaga and Air Force. I feel really good about that," said head coach Jason Brown.
"We were able to win the doubles point every day which makes me feel good about our future. I think the doubles point in college tennis is incredibly important and the guys have been playing really well."
The Colorado Cup marks the last fall event for the entire Grizzly squad, who have posted the strongest tournament season in program history with a final and semifinal appearance at the ITA Regional Tournament in October.
Those deep runs at regionals earned sophomore Matt Upton and junior Duncan McCall an invite to the sectional championship in Phoenix this coming week while the rest of the team sets their sights on the winter offseason and spring dual schedule.
"This has been about as fine a fall as I can ever remember Montana having. Across the board, the guys really competed well," Brown said.
"I think we can take a lot of momentum into the coming season with what we've done this fall. I feel good about this state of things, especially considering we kind of thought this might be a bit of a rebuild year. Well, I think the rebuild has already happened this fall. We graduated a ton of talent last year, but Matt and Duncan have really stepped up, taken great leadership roles and filled the gap."
The Griz opened the Colorado Cup taking on Air Force in its first day of action. The Grizzlies earned two doubles victories, with McCall and Upton teaming up for a 6-3 victory, while Johnny Wilkinson and Darrshan Suresh Kumar added a 6-1 win to clinch the point. Montana continued to battle in singles, adding five victories to finish the opening day with seven total match wins.
Montana continued its weekend at the Colorado Cup with a matchup against the defending Summit League champion Denver Pioneers. The Grizzlies again found success in doubles, earning two victories. Joseph Townes and Wilkinson teamed up for a 6-3 win, while Timo Meyer and Suresh Kumar added another victory with a 7-6(2) win in a tiebreaker. Montana added two singles wins to finish the second day of competition with four total match victories.
Montana closed out the tournament with a strong performance against Gonzaga, again clinching the doubles point to sweep the weekend. Meyer and Wilkinson earned a 6-4 win, while Townes and Suresh Kumar added a 6-1 victory. Montana carried that momentum into singles play, where Upton, McCall and Meyer each earned victories. Upton defeated Jay Fairclough in straight sets, while McCall dropped just two games in his victory over Diego Herrera. Meyer also delivered a straight-set victory over James Hutchinson. The Grizzlies finished the final day of competition with five total match victories.
Upton and McCall will compete at the ITA West Sectional for a shot at the NCAA Tournament Nov. 5 – 8.
