Griz win Orange Draw title at Dar Walters Classic

MISSOULA - Two of Montana's three doubles pairings advanced to bracket championship matches at the Dar Walters Classic at Boise State over the weekend, with one pair claiming a tournament title.
Junior Johnny Wilkinson and freshman Timo Meyer won the Orange Draw, defeating Idaho State in the final on day three. Sophomores Matt Upton and Darrshan Suresh Kumar won two matches to reach the Blue Draw final before falling to a Boise State pair.
Montana was one of nine programs competing at the Dar Walters Classic, annually one of the top fall tournaments in the Rocky Mountain West. The Grizzlies sent six players to Boise.
The three Grizzly pairings went undefeated on day one and finished 7-2 overall, with two teams reaching the finals. Montana defeated pairings from Utah State, Idaho, Idaho State and Montana State.
The tournament used a "Dominant Duo" format, pairing two players from the same team to compete in both doubles and singles action each day.
"It was a fun weekend and I feel really good about where we are at. We found a lot of things we have to get better at, but coming home with some trophies and going undefeated against the Bobcats – we will always take that," head coach Jason Brown said.
"The biggest thing I'm proud of is that we have a really classy group of guys who are competing hard and doing it the right way. They do all the right things off the court as well, so it was fun to see them get rewarded on the court."
Meyer, a freshman from Germany, ran the table unbeaten to pace the Grizzlies over the weekend and earn the first title of his college career in the Orange Draw with his partner Wilkinson. Meyer rallied in the third set of his final match, defeating Idaho State's Justin Illic 6-1 to clinch the victory for the Grizzly pair.
"Timo made some great adjustments in that final match. He's been getting better every time he takes the court, and I think we can expect special things out of him in the future," added Brown.
After two consecutive tournaments the Grizzlies now turn their attention to the premiere event of the fall season, the ITA Mountain Regional, set to be hosted by BYU in Provo, Utah Oct. 5-10.
