The Montana women's golf team opened its spring season with rounds of 308 and 318 on Tuesday as the Bowling Green Intercollegiate opened at Wigwam Golf Club in Litchfield Park, Ariz.
Â
The Grizzlies are tied for 13th in the 15-team field, with a closing round still to be played on Wednesday on the course that will be the site of the Big Sky Conference Championship in April.
Â
Montana totaled 23 birdies over 36 holes on Tuesday but on an up-and-down day played more than three times as many at bogey or worse.
Â
"We saw some of the best golf we have ever played today," said coach Jimmy Mee. "Unfortunately we also had more big numbers than we have ever had.
Â
"Some of that was due to jitters that come with the first tournament of the spring and some of it was choosing the wrong target and not pulling off the shot."
Â
Bella Johnson (74-80) and Hannah Ports (77-77) are tied for 49th, Raina Ports (79-78) is tied for 62nd, Kate Bogenschutz (78-83) sits in 71st place and Katie Lewis (79-88) is tied for 79th.
Â
Johnson had nine of the team's 23 birdies on Tuesday, including four on the course's back nine during the second round of play. Raina Ports and Bogenschutz both had four birdies.
Â
Texas-El Paso (282-286) is atop the leaderboard by seven strokes over Texas-Arlington (286-289). Drake (288-292) is in third place.
Â
UTEP's Atikan Cherdchoo (68-71) holds a one-stroke lead over teammate Nichapas Thawinwan (74-66) and Toledo's Brooklyn Millard (70-70).
