Lewis leads Montana, Griz place 10th

The Montana women's golf team closed the Yellowstone Intercollegiate on Tuesday with a final-round 302 as the Grizzlies finished 10th at Riverside Country Club in Bozeman.

It was Montana's best team score of the fall. The Grizzlies, who defeated Creighton in the 11-team field, posted scores of 305 and 318 on Monday.

"Things were better today, fewer mistakes," said coach Jimmy Mee. "We still left a lot out there but it was encouraging to see better decisions, not as many big numbers and not as many strings of bogeys.

"Still have some things we can clean up this week, then hopefully we can get a little momentum going into our home tournament and put a few rounds together."

Montana State (289-297-288) won its home tournament by a dozen strokes over Weber State (301-291-294). North Dakota's Mallory Uselman (67-72-76) finished three strokes clear of the field.

Katie Lewis (75-80-75) led Montana and tied for 33rd overall. She played her first 10 holes on Monday at 1-under, then wrapped up play on Tuesday by playing her final 11 holes at 1-over.

Kate Bogenschutz shook off a pair of rounds in the 80s on Monday to card a 74 on Tuesday, one off her collegiate best. "Kate hit it great today. She played a solid round of golf," said Mee.

Zoe Bar-Or (74-78-79) tied for 37th in her second collegiate tournament. Bogenschutz (80-81-74), Bella Johnson (79-79-77) and Hope Torres (77-82-76) all tied for 47th.

Competing as an individual, freshman Ellie Sticha wrapped up her first collegiate tournament with rounds of 82, 81 and 79.

"Hopefully we got some of the competitive rust knocked off. Now she knows what to expect playing in college tournaments," said Mee. "It will be fun to see her grow as a player. She has a ton of potential."

Montana will host the Sun Mountain Intercollegiate next Monday and Tuesday at the Missoula Country Club. Eastern Washington, Idaho State and Portland State also will compete.

"It should be exciting," said Mee. "It's a course we'll know better than all the teams coming in, which will be nice. We'll practice out there all week and be ready to roll."
