Grizzlies prepped for big weekend in Pocatello
2/11/2026 10:13:00 AM | Men's Track and Field, Women's Track and Field
February is always the most important time during the indoor track season to be trending in the right direction before conference meets. The coming weekend is circled on the calendar in any season, but even more so in 2026 for head coach Doug Fraley and the Griz track & field program.
Â
Montana will not only be continuing its progression through the 2026 season, one that has included six school records and a complete re-write of the program's all-time top 10 list, but the Grizzlies will also get a first look at the conference championship venue.
Â
Holt Arena, on the campus of Idaho State, will host the Big Sky Indoor Championships from Feb. 26-28.
Â
"It's the final big weekend of the regular season, so we want to continue the progress so that we feel good about where we are at heading into the championships two weeks later," Fraley said. "It's always a big benefit to get on the venue where the Big Sky Championship is going to be."
Â
The final big meet of the regular season will also be beneficial in that it simulates the schedule of the conference championships. The meet starts at 3:00 p.m. on Friday and will have prelims in races up to 800m.
Â
The top 9 will also advance to finals in the horizontal jumps and throwing events. The meet resumes on Saturday morning at 11:00 a.m. with the mile and continues until 3:00 p.m.
Â
It will be a good test for Montana's athletes to see how they handle competing on back-to-back days. It will also be an indicator of which athletes Fraley will bring back to Pocatello in two weeks for the championships.
Â
"A lot of our roster has been solidified, but there are open spots that people on the men's and women's roster will be going for," Fraley said. "The last regular season meet is always a big one for that because our athletes have a chance to solidify or grab one of the remaining spots on the roster. That's always a big deal."
Â
Fraley's team has had a fantastic indoor season up to this point. The women have received two weekly honors from league, six school records have fallen, and 41 athletes currently rank inside the top 10 in the Big Sky.
Â
They will look to maintain the positive trajectory at the Mountain State Games.
Â
"I think we're where we want to be right now," Fraley said. "Again, we need to continue to get better because everybody else in the league has done that the last two weeks, but I feel good about where we're at right now and we just need to finish off the regular season with one more great effort in Pocatello this weekend."
Â
They should have the chance to do so with good competition surrounding them inside Holt Arena. The Grizzlies will compete against Idaho State and Weber State from the Big Sky, but there will be several other D-I programs, including Utah and BYU, at the games.
Â
"It's another opportunity for our athletes to see some new teams and good competition in most event areas," Fraley said. "That's what you want going into your last regular season meet is you want your kids to be challenged and pushed, and I think we'll certainly get that this weekend."
Â
GRIZZLY ATHLETES OF THE WEEK
Montana has had two Big Sky Conference Athletes of the Week this season on the women's side, Erin Wilde and Callie Wilson. It's the first time since 2019 that the Grizzlies have had multiple athletes receive the weekly honor on the women's side.
Â
Wilde was named the Indoor Field Athlete of the Week on Jan. 19 following her winning performance at the Spokane Indoor Challenge. Wilde cleared 5-10.75 to win her 10th consecutive indoor title.
Â
The jump was the second best in program history, trailing only a mark of 6-0 from Wilde during her junior season. The senior has five Big Sky Championships and has won 22 total meets in her illustrious career.
Â
Wilson earned the weekly honor on Feb. 9 after setting a program record in the 60m with a time of 7.35 to win the Carignan Classic. It's the 3rd fastest time in the event in Big Sky Conference history.
Â
The freshman from Bonney Lake, Wash. now has Montana's program records in the 60m and 200m and is in the top three in Big Sky history in both events.
