The Montana men's tennis team took care of business at home, earning a decisive 5-2 victory over Weber State at the Peak Racquet Club in Missoula on Friday.
Â
The Griz clinched the doubles point with two-straight wins, then took the first four singles wins in straight sets to improve to 10-6 overall and stay unbeaten in league Big Sky Conference play at 3-0. The Wildcats fall to 2-11 on the season and 1-3 in conference play.
Â
The win sends Montana into Sunday's Big Sky championship rematch against first place Northern Arizona with momentum, with UM now having won six duals in a row.
Â
"We continue to be really sharp in doubles, which is great to see. Sometimes these matches are tricky with NAU looming, and the guys made sure not to fall into that trap. Thy knew how dangerous Weber State is. They're fiery and can play really well, and our guys did nothing but stay on task from the get-go. I'm really proud of the effort today, especially considering we won everything in straight sets," said head coach Jason Brown.
Â
"Matt Upton has been battling a little injury and he led the charge in singles. He was a warrior out there today got it done quickly to set the precedent for us. So, good across the board for the Griz today."
Â
Upton got the job done in near record time for the Griz in both singles and doubles. He and Johnny Wilkinson paired up to beat WSU's LeCoq/Mottier pair 6-1 in the first match to finish. He followed that up with a dominant win over Toit Malan 6-2, 6-1, for the first singles match to finish as well.
Â
The senior tandem of Tom Bittner and Eivind Tandberg clinched the doubles point for UM on court two, taking down the Malan/Zulch pair 6-4 to put the Griz out to a 1-0 team lead.
Â
In singles, Upton's win put UM up 2-0 in short order before Bittner rolled over Ken Dinh on court one 6-2, 6-3, to put the Griz up again at 3-0.
Â
Baltazar Wiger-Nordas rebounded from a slow start to clinch the team victory for the Griz, winning a first set tiebreaker and going on to beat Theo Mottier in straight sets 7-6(5), 6-3, on court two, and UM was up for good 4-0.
Â
Joseph Townes finished the winning for Montana on court five, improving to 9-3 as an individual with a 6-2, 6-4, win over Clement LeCoq on court five.
Â
The Grizzlies now turn their attention to perennial powerhouse NAU, who currently sit at the top of the conference table with 12 wins. Montana defeated Northern Arizona in a thriller to win the Big Sky championship tournament in Phoenix last April. The Griz host the Jacks at 9:30 a.m. on Sunday morning, April 5, at the Peak. Admission is free.
