Bar-Or seeking top 10 in collegiate debut

Montana freshman Zoe Bar-Or shot rounds of 73 and 75 on Monday as the UNC Bear Brawl opened at the Greeley Country Club in Greeley, Colo.

Playing in her first collegiate tournament, Bar-Or is tied for ninth on the par-71 course, with a final round to be played on Tuesday morning.

Bar-Or, from Greenwood Village, Colo., opened her tournament with a bogey, then played her next 14 holes at 3-under before debuting with a 73.

She carded three more birdies for Round 2, her six for the day two off the tournament lead.
Â
"She kept it in check, even when things went south for a couple holes here and there. She didn't lose confidence that she can turn it around, and she did," said coach Jimmy Mee.

"She stayed solid attitude-wise and hit a lot of shots really close to the hole, which makes it nice."

Kate Bogenschutz (76-78) is tied for 18th, Hope Torres (79-79) is tied for 24th, Katie Lewis (83-78) is tied for 30th and Isabella Johnson (84-81) is sitting in 32nd place.

"There was a lot of really good stuff," said Mee. "There were stretches where we looked like we can compete with anybody, then we had other stretches.

"Attitudes were good and it was fun to see people competing. It will be fun to see what happens tomorrow."

St. Thomas (285-295) sits atop the team leaderboard, with Texas-Rio Grande Valley (297-290) and Northern Colorado (292-300) rounding out the top three.

Montana (311-310) is in fifth place in the six-team field.

UTRGV's Miriam Barcalova shot rounds of 70 and 70 and is 2-under after 36 holes. St. Thomas's Kathryn VanArragon (70-71) also is under par with 18 holes to go.

"Just play free, how they know how to play instead of worrying about what might happen," Mee said when asked about his message prior to Tuesday's final round.

"I'm going to go attack this golf course because I know I can shoot a good score out here."
