After picking up the biggest win of his college career over Idaho’s two-time first-team All-Big Sky Felipe Fonseca in a dramatic 5-2 Griz victory and finishing the weekend at 3-0 in singles and doubles, Alex Canellopoulos has been named the GoGriz.com male Featured Griz of the Week.
The junior from Greece emerged from a recent slump in a big way this week opening the three-match homestand with a 7-5, 7-6 (7-5) win over Fonseca, who had only lost six Big Sky matches in his entire career and ran the 2017 conference table undefeated.
Canellopoulos went on to dominate his other two opponents in straight sets this week, beating Northern Colorado’s Nick Wade 6-1, 6-0 and Portland State’s Sam Roberts 6-2, 6-1.
With his doubles partner Ludvig Hallgren, Canellopoulos made quick work of Idaho’s Fonseca/Scarpelli pair (6-3), UNC’s Exted/Kritzinger pair (6-2) and PSU’s Roberts/Bukhari pair (6-1).
Canellopoulos and the Griz finish the regular season at home this weekend as the #2 ranked team in the Big Sky. UM will host Montana State in a Brawl of the Wild match at 2 p.m. on Friday, then cap the season against Eastern Washington on Sunday at 11 a.m. Both matches are scheduled to be played at the Lindsay Tennis Center in the heart of the UM campus.
