MISSOULA - University of Montana Grizzly freshman forward Mike Chavez, who had been suspended from the basketball team after being charged with a DUI earlier this year, has been reinstated to the squad, announced Griz Head Coach Pat Kennedy.
"Mike has been working hard and he knows what our expectations of him are," Kennedy said. "He has been doing everything that we have asked of him and I thought that he had earned the opportunity to rejoin our program."
During his suspension Chavez missed five games. The last game he played in was on February 1, 2003, a home contest against Sacramento State. He resumed practice with the team Monday, Feb. 24.
The Griz are at Sacramento State and Northern Arizona this week for their final two Big Sky Conference regular-season games.
"We will continue to support Mike, and as I have said before, I believe that he still has an outstanding chance to have a positive future here at The University of Montana," Kennedy said.
Chavez, a freshman from Heart Butte, Montana, had played in 20 of UM's first 21 games, starting in six. He averages 4.2 points and 3.6 rebounds a game.
Coach Kennedy said he would make no further comments on the situation.
