Lady Griz steamroll Eastern Washington

MISSOULA, Mont. - The University of Montana women's tennis team won the doubles point and triumphed in all six singles matches in a 7-0 sweep of Eastern Washington on Friday afternoon at the Robert O. Lindsay Tennis Center in Missoula, Mont. With the win the Lady Griz snapped an eight-match losing streak and improved to 2-13 overall, 2-4 in league play. The Eagles dropped to 0-13 on the year and 0-5 against Big Sky competition.
Montana won four-of-six singles matches in straight sets en route to their first sweep of the season. At the No. 1 singles position junior Annabelle Janairo defeated EWU's Kim Cabaling, 4-6, 6-0, 6-1. Lady Griz senior Michaela Zima outlasted Jen Jolley at the No. 2 slot with a 5-7, 6-2, (10-7) third set tie-breaking victory. Montana junior Lindsey Torgerson won 6-1, 6-1 over Marie Carroll at the No. 3.
UM freshman Colby Fannin garnered her first singles victory of the season with a 6-1, 6-4 win over Teri Sherrill at the No. 4. Sophomore Jonna Schwartz and freshman Malena Rosen also prevailed in singles play, with Schwartz topping Wanda Garcia 6-4, 6-3 at the No. 5, and Rosen winning 6-1, 6-1 at the No. 6 slot over Lesley Liddell.
Montana earned the doubles point for the first time this spring by winning two-of-three matches over Eastern Washington. The Lady Griz duo of Janairo/Zima won 8-5 over Cabaling/Jolley at the No. 1 position. UM's other win came at the No. 2 where the tandem of Torgerson/Schwartz defeated Carroll/Sherrill, 9-7.
The Lady Griz secured at least a fifth place finish in regular season conference play and return to action this coming week at the Big Sky Conference Championships in Ogden, Utah which runs Friday, April 30 thru Sunday, May 2.
