The Montana women's tennis team picked up one win in the doubles round and Kelsey Phillips remained unbeaten in Big Sky play with a singles win on court one, but Montana State defended hits home courts, defeating the Griz 6-1 on Saturday in Bozeman.
Â
The loss snaps UM's three-year win streak over MSU and puts the Grizzlies at 2-15 on the season and 0-7 in conference play, while Phillips improves to 7-0 against Big Sky opponents and 11-6 overall on the year, putting her in the running for league MVP and regional honors as well. Montana State improves to 7-10 and 3-4 in conference action.
Â
"Today was a challenging match for a young team. Bozeman is a tough road environment, and we need to take this result and understand what we need to do to be able to come back and change that result," said head coach Steve Ascher.
Â
"Excited for Kelsey to continue her high level of competing to earn the win today. She is playing with great composure and understanding what needs to be done strategically to give herself the edge."
Â
Phillips also went unbeaten on the day with a doubles round win. Her and Meghna Anand paired up to defeat MSU's Stverakova/Wise pair in dominant fashion, 6-1. The Griz were in with a chance to win the opening round on court three, with Kate Prichard and Kamila Slovakova tying the set 5-5, but the Cats pulled away to clinch the point with a 7-5 win and a 6-4 win on court two.
Â
In singles, Phillips made short work of Anna Wise on court one, cruising to a 6-2, 6-2, win for Montana's only victory of the day.
Â
Anand picked up a first set win in a tiebreaker, beating Angel Bean 7-7(3) to capture the momentum on court two, but the Grizzly freshman ran out of steam in the second and third sets, falling to Bean 6-1, 6-1 in the final two frames. The remainder of Montana's matches all went the way of the Bobcats in straight sets.
Â
The Griz now prepare to close the season at home against Weber State (2-12, 1-4 BSC) on April 18 at the Peak Racquet Club in Missoula, with the match getting underway at 10 a.m.
