UM tennis programs wrap up fall season

The University of Montana men??s and women??s tennis teams wrapped up the non-tradition fall tennis season with successful showings at their respective ITA Regional Championships.
The Montana men, competing in the Region VII Championships at Darling Tennis Center in Las Vegas, Nev., were led by senior Jan Steenekamp who won two singles matches before bowing out in the Round of 16. Steenekamp won 6-1, 6-3 over Colorado??s Geoff Chizever and 6-0, 6-2 over Eastern Washington??s Kyle Schraeder in the opening rounds. Steenekamp lost 6-3, 6-1 to top-seeded Luke Shields of Boise State who went on to win the singles competition.
Junior Stuart Wing went 1-1 in singles action for the Grizzlies. Wing, from Kempton Park, South Africa, won 6-3, 6-3 in his opening-round matchup with Denver??s Kalle Rosen. Wing lost 6-2, 3-6, 6-1 to Graeme Kassautzki of New Mexico in the Round of 64.
Senior Varun Giri lost 7-5, 6-3 to Montana State??s Tejeshwara Chigateri in the first round of singles play.
In doubles action Steenekamp and Wing teamed up to win 8-3 over Montana State??s Chigateri and Jake Berriochoa in the Round of 64. Steenekamp-Wing lost out in the Round of 32, falling 8-6 to BYU??s Dominik Kaufhold and James Ludlow.
The Montana women competed at the Central Regional Championship at the University of Utah??s Eccles Tennis Center in Salt Lake City, Utah. The Grizzlies managed a doubles victory in the Round of 64 with sophomore Mari Castello and freshman Liz Walker winning 8-3 over Idaho State??s Denise Cockrell and Armine Sarkavygan. Castello-Walker lost out in the Round of 32 to Tulsa??s Kindsay Grimes and Kabaletta by a score of 8-4.
In singles play senior Jonna Schwartz lost 6-3, 6-2 in the opening round of the main draw to Oklahoma State??s Lauren Simmons. Schwartz also dropped a consolation singles match, losing 6-1, 6-3 to Arkansas State??s Marina Engelbrecht in the Round of 32.
Sophomore Mari Castello lost 6-1, 6-2 in the qualifying singles round to Beth Chermel from Iowa State.
