For the second-straight week the Montana men's tennis team will return to Missoula unbeaten on a two-match road trip after the Griz took care of business with a 6-1 win over Lewis-Clark State on Saturday in Lewiston, Idaho.
Â
Doubles continued to be a strength for UM, sweeping the round with wins on all three courts. The Griz then picked up wins on three of the top four singles courts before closing out the dual with three more wins at the bottom of the lineup.
Â
"That was a great test for us. That's the best LC State team they've had since I've been head coach. They really competed well and I think they're riding high after that win over Sac State. I think sometimes we've played them they've been just happy to play a match, but they believed today. They were there to win today and that's exactly what we needed out of those guys. It was competitive in a lot of spots, so hats off to them," said head coach Jason Brown.
Â
"This was also the last chance for us to play back-to-back matches, which we'll have to do at the conference championship, so it was good to get those reps in as well and a nice test run for us."
Â
Montana his hitting its stride as the business end of the season rolls around, now winners of five straight duals and six of their last eight, while closing-out nonconference play with an 9-6 overall record after beating the Warriors.
Â
Following a month-long road stretch the Griz also prepare to return home at 2-0 in Big Sky play after taking down the Idaho Vandals in Moscow on Friday. Lewis-Clark State – who upset Sacramento State and took two matches off Idaho State last week – falls to 6-7 on the year.
Â
"We just couldn't feel better about heading into the home stretch after winning five straight. We've got some banged-up bodies so we're really thankful to have such good depth this year. That hasn't always been the case and the depth in the lineup showed up this week. That's what college athletics is all about," Brown added.
Â
Without the use of top-line player Tom Bittner, the Griz took the court at the LCSC Tennis Center with a shuffled lineup. Montana opened the round with Friday's clincher Moritz Lesjak and Joseph Townes pairing up for a 6-4 win on court three over the Naranjo/Gatti pair.
Â
Soon after, UM's No. 1 pair of Baltazar Wiger-Nordas and Duncan McCall followed suit with a 6-4 win of their own over the Serna/Moreira pair to clinch the first team point. Eivind Tandberg and Johnny Wilkinson finished off the round with a 7-5 win on court two over the Bolvin/Coloma pair to give UM the sweep.
Â
In singles, Wiger-Nordas – the defending Big Sky Player of the Week – moved up to court one in Bittner's absence and didn't skip a beat, defeating Louam Boivin 6-2, 6-1, before McCall followed suit with a straight set, 6-2, 6-4, win over Pablo Herrera Serna on court two.
Â
Townes was able to rebound and win UM's only three set match of the day, defeating Nell Rollin with strong second and third frames 6-7(5), 6-2, 6-0. Lesjak picked up his second win of the week, beating Cesar Coloma 6-3, 6-3, and Tandberg capped the match with a win on court six over Juan Pablo Naranjo 6-2, 6-3.
Â
"Big shout out to Eivind for making his way back into the singles lineup. After coming off an ankle injury he's been limited to basically doubles this year and he looked great today. He's a killer at the Peak so I'm excited to get home and hopefully rack-up some victories," said Brown.
Â
UP NEXT: After a month on the road, the Griz now return to Missoula for the heart of conference play as UM prepares to host four of the traditionally strongest teams in the Big Sky to close the regular season. Montana starts the homestand against Weber State on April 3 followed by a rematch of last year's Big Sky tournament championship against Northern Arizona on April 5.
