The University of Montana women's tennis team (2-3) is on the road for the second consecutive weekend with dual matches against No. 75 Washington State (3-6) and Lewis-Clark State (7-1). The Grizzlies face the Cougars at 1 p.m. (MST) on Saturday, February 26, before heading to Moscow, Idaho, to take on the Warriors at 11 a.m. (MST) on Sunday, February 27.
Washington State scouting report: The Cougars, 3-6 on the year, are coming off a 7-0 loss to No. 1 Stanford last Saturday. WSU, which has faced seven ranked opponents this spring, recorded a 4-2 win over then No. 75 Santa Clara last Thursday. The Cougars are led by seniors Nora Gaal and Chris Martinez who both continue to move up the school's all-time singles victories list. Gaal ranks sixth with 65 career wins, Martinez is tied for eighth with 63.
Lewis-Clark State scouting report: The Warriors have won seven straight dual matches since dropping their season-opener to Idaho. Sophomore Maria Resende and senior Hephzi Segura play the top two singles spots for Lewis-Clark State who defeated Montana 4-3 last year in Missoula.
Quoting assistant coach Jen Anderson: "The women's team continues to improve with each match and each practice, so we expect to play better this weekend against Washington State and Lewis-Clark State. Washington State is ranked in the top 100 and they are always strong. Lewis-Clark has some big wins this spring, including a 4-3 victory over Gonzaga who beat us. I expect that Mari Castello and Jonna Schwartz, who have played very well at Nos. 4 and 5 singles, to continue their strong play and for the rest of the girls to improve."
Last weekend: The Grizzlies split a pair of matches last weekend, bringing their season record to 2-3. Montana lost to Gonzaga 5-2 last Friday in a match played in Cheney, Wash. Junior Jonna Schwartz and freshman Mari Castello racked up wins in singles play for the Griz. Castello, with partner senior Annabelle Janairo, also won at No. 1 doubles.
Montana rebounded to win five of six singles matches in a 5-2 victory at Eastern Washington last Saturday. Senior Lindsey Torgerson and Schwartz tallied wins in both singles and doubles play for UM in the lone league matchup between the schools.
Montana picked fourth in Big Sky poll: The women's squad was picked fourth in the 2005 Big Sky Conference preseason poll that was voted on by the league's coaches. UM received 19 points which tied them for fourth with Weber State. Sacramento State, which has won the last three league championships, received six first-place votes to be a unanimous choice to win the championship. Northern Arizona was picked second while Montana State was third. Idaho State and Eastern Washington rounded out the fifth and sixth spots.
