The University of Montana men's tennis team (5-9, 1-1 Big Sky) faces three matches in as many days with contests against Nevada (8-9), Pacific (9-9) and conference foe Sacramento State (8-11, 3-1 Big Sky).
The Grizzlies square off against the Wolf Pack Friday in Sacramento, Calif. UM travels to Stockton, Calif., to face the Tigers Saturday before returning to Sacramento for a Sunday match with the Hornets.
Nevada scouting report: The Wolf Pack have won three of their last four duals but haven't played since a 4-2 loss to Montana State March 27 in Missoula. Nevada and Montana met earlier this season indoors at the Missoula Athletic Club with the Wolf Pack prevailing 5-2. Junior Adam Jooste, who is 12-5 this spring at the No. 1 singles position, defeated Griz freshman Colin Mascall who had won six of his last seven contests.
Pacific scouting report: The Tigers are coming off a 4-3 win over No. 66 UC Santa Barbara. Pacific is 2-4 in matches this spring against opponents ranked by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association. Montana and Pacific both faced Portland and Boise State this year. The Griz lost both contests, 6-1 to UP and 7-0 to BSU. The Tigers split, losing 6-1 to BSU and winning 5-2 over UP. Sophomore Vladimir Zdravkovic leads the Tigers with a 16-2 dual match record at the No. 1 position.
Sacramento State scouting report: After a stretch in March where they won six-of-seven matches, the Hornets have since lost five straight. Montana and Sac State both faced Eastern Washington, Portland and Montana State this year. The Griz won 4-3 over EWU, lost 6-1 to UP, and dropped a pair of 7-0 matches to MSU. The Hornets won 7-0 over EWU, but lost 4-3 to both UP and MSU.
Last time out: The Griz were 1-2 last weekend at the Appleton Tennis Center in Boise, Idaho. Portland handed UM a 6-1 loss, and host team Boise State swept the Griz 7-0. Montana won 4-2 over Idaho, avenging an earlier season loss to the Vandals.
Mascall went 2-1 at the No. 1 for the Grizzlies. The 6-foot-2 lefty recorded UM's only victory in the 6-1 loss to Portland, 6-2, 3-6, 6-0 over Matt Loucks. Mascall was joined by junior Varun Giri, sophomore Stuart Wing and freshman Hugh Daniels as singles victors against Idaho.
Griz picked fifth in preseason poll: The Montana men received 16 points and were picked fifth in the 2005 Big Sky Conference preseason poll that was voted on by the league's coaches. Montana State, which won the league championship a year ago, picked up five first-place votes as the No. 1 team. Sacramento State, Idaho State and Northern Arizona came in at Nos. 2, 3 and 4. Weber State and Eastern Washington round out the final two spots.
