Montana women sweep ISU to close regular season

The University of Montana women's tennis team took the doubles point and won all seven singles contests in a 7-0 win over Idaho State Sunday morning at the Lindsay Tennis Center in Missoula.
The Grizzlies end the dual match regular season at 7-13 overall, 3-3 in Big Sky Conference play. The Bengals fall to 1-17, 0-6 in league play.
Montana won all seven singles matches in straight sets, beginning at the top of the lineup with Cheyne Ursich. The sophomore from Racho Palos Verdes, Calif., snapped a 10-match losing streak with a 6-4, 6-1 win over ISU's Denise Cockrell.
Seniors Annabelle Janairo and Lindsey Torgerson were victorious in their final home matches as Grizzlies. Janairo defeated Armine Sarkavagyan 6-3, 7-5 at the No. 2 position. Torgerson won 6-3, 6-2 over Valerie Espinosa at the No. 3.
Freshman Mari Castello, who boasts a team-best 14-5 singles record this spring, breezed through her match at the No. 4 with a 6-0, 6-1 win over Quinlan Hatch.
Junior Jonna Schwartz and sophomore Colby Fannin recorded victories at singles Nos. 5 and 6 respectively. Schwartz improved her season singles mark to 12-8 with a 6-2, 6-0 win over Katherine Zigars. Fannin snapped a seven-match losing streak with a 6-1, 6-4 win over Kacey Peach.
Montana took two of three matches and won the doubles point for the fourth consecutive contest.
UM's top doubles tandem of Janairo and Castello rolled to an 8-1 win over Sarkavagyan and Zigars at the No. 1. Torgerson and Schwartz dominated at the No. 3 position, winning 8-0 over Espinosa and Courtney Bennion.
The Grizzlies (7-13, 3-3 Big Sky) end the spring in a tie for third with Northern Arizona in the conference standings. Montana, who lost to NAU 4-3 in the weekend-opening match Friday, has earned the four-seed in the Big Sky Conference championships which take place April 28-May 1.
