UM women top NAU, advance to semifinal

The No. 5 seed University of Montana women's tennis team won the doubles point and took three singles matches in a 4-1 win over No. 4 seed Northern Arizona Thursday afternoon in Phoenix, Ariz. The Grizzlies improve to 8-13 overall and advance to the semifinal to face top-seed Sacramento State (21-4). The Lumberjacks end their season at 4-15.
The Griz opened the dual by winning the doubles point, a feat they have accomplished in the last six matches.
Senior Annabelle Janairo and freshman Mari Castello won for the fourth time in their last five contests. The Grizzlies top doubles duo outlasted NAU's Julie Schmandt and Susan McClelland to win 9-8 at the No. 1 position.
Senior Lindsey Torgerson and junior Jonna Schwartz won their fifth straight doubles match at the No. 3 position, topping Sheena Lister and Ashley Dille, 8-1.
The Grizzlies won all three singles matches in straight sets to earn a trip to the semifinal round for the second straight year.
Janairo won 6-2, 6-4 over NAU's McClelland at the No. 2 for her third straight singles win.
Castello, who entered the match having won nine of her last 10 contests, won 6-3, 6-0 over Ashley Dille at the No. 4.
Schwartz won her fifth straight contests, 6-2, 6-4 over Georgie Mills at the No. 5.
Friday's semifinal contests against preseason favorite Sacramento State begins at 2 p.m. (MTN) at the Phoenix Tennis Center.
