Montana women sweep Gonzaga, 7-0

The University of Montana women??s tennis team defeated Gonzaga 7-0 Friday night indoors at the Missoula Athletic Club. The Grizzlies took all six singles matches in straight sets and swept the doubles point for the win in their season-opener. The Bulldogs dropped to 0-7 on the season.
The Grizzlies were dominant in singles play, with three freshman newcomers each recording their first collegiate dual match victories. Freshman Liz Walker won 6-2, 6-1 over Emily Anderson at the No. 1 position. Junior Cheyne Ursich won 6-2, 6-1 over Erin Humphrey at the No. 2.
Freshman Martyna Nowak cruised by Carrie Schofield at the No. 3 position, winning 6-0, 6-0. Sophomore Mari Castello won 6-1, 6-1 over Courtney Lau at the No. 4.
Senior Jonna Schwartz and freshman Alexandra Ulesanu both were victorious in matches at the No. 5 and No. 6 positions. Schwartz defeated Erica Moldenhauer 6-3, 6-3, and Ulesanu won 6-0, 6-2 over Allie Hause.
The Grizzlies opened 2006 with strong doubles play. Walker and Castello teamed up at the No. 1 position to defeat Anderson and Schofield, 8-2. Schwartz and Ursich won 8-7 (10-8) at the No. 2 position over Humphrey and Sydney Leaderhouse. Nowak and Malena Rosen won 8-4 over Lau and Moldenhauer at the No. 3.
Montana (1-0) hosts Idaho (1-7) at 9 a.m. (MST) Sunday with matches played indoors at the Missoula Athletic Club.
