Walker named Big Sky tennis player of the week

University of Montana freshman Liz Walker has been named Big Sky Conference Women??s Tennis Player of the Week the league office announced Tuesday. Walker, from Wandin, Australia, went 2-0 in both singles and doubles matches as the Grizzlies opened the spring season with victories over Gonzaga and Idaho.
"Liz moved very well all weekend long. I was very impressed with her composure in our opening week of competition," head women's tennis coach Jen Anderson said. "Liz had a great all-around effort and we expect her to continue that strong play throughout the season."
Walker, playing No. 1 singles, beat Gonzaga??s Emily Anderson 6-2, 6-1 in Montana??s 7-0 victory. Walker teamed with sophomore Mari Castello to win the No. 1 doubles match 8-2.
Walker topped Idaho??s Patricia Ruman 4-6, 7-6, 6-2 in the Grizzlies?? 5-2 victory over the Vandals. Walker and Castello won the No. 1 doubles match 8-0.
Walker is 6-3 in singles and doubles in her freshman campaign at Montana. This is her first Player of the Week Award.
Montana (2-0) returns to the courts this week with matches at the UNLV Invitational. The Grizzlies open play at 2 p.m. (MST) Friday against No. 44 Fresno State.
