The University of Montana men??s and women??s tennis teams will each face a pair dual matches this weekend. The Griz men (1-1) will face Lewis-Clark State (7-2) on Saturday, Feb. 24, at noon (MTN) and Montana State (1-5) on Sunday, Feb. 25 at 10 a.m. Both matches will be played indoors at the Missoula Athletic Club. The UM women (0-5) will face a neutral-site match with Drake on Saturday at 9 a.m. (MTN) in Columbia, Mo., and a road contest with Missouri on Sunday at 8 a.m.
Men??s report:
The Grizzlies (1-1) opened the 2007 dual match season Feb. 2-3 with a 4-3 neutral-site win over UC Davis before falling 4-3 at Gonzaga. This weekend??s matches against LCSC and MSU are the only two home contests that Montana will play until April 7 when the Griz host Idaho. Sunday??s match with the Bobcats is not counted toward the league standings.
??It??s nice to not have to travel,?? head men??s tennis coach Kris Nord said. ??LC State is going to be tough. We??ve had some battles with them over the last two years. I think our motivation is pretty clear with the match against MSU. We??d like to get another win against our rival. It will be a dog-fight against both of those schools this weekend.??
Senior Stuart Wing will make his return to the singles lineup this weekend. Wing, a two-time All-Big Sky selection from Kempton Park, South Africa, did not participate in singles competition in the Grizzlies?? first two dual matches. Sophomore Colin Dektar, from Zielona Gora, Poland, is 1-1 at the No. 1 singles this spring, a position that he and Wing could split time at this season.
Continuing his strong play from a year ago is sophomore Felipe Raw, a Brasilia, Brazil, native, who is 2-0 at the No. 2 singles position. Newcomer Mikolaj Borkowski, from Olsztyn, Poland, is also 2-0 in singles play at the No. 4 position.
??I think the fact that Mikolaj came in and played well as a freshman has been a bonus,?? Nord said. ??I??m very confident in the top end of our lineup. Now we need to get everyone playing well on the same day.??
Women??s report:
Montana (0-5) enters the weekend seeking its first win of the dual match season. UM last competed two weeks ago with a loss at Boise State (L, 7-0) and neutral-site losses to Wichita State (L, 6-1) and Nevada (L, 6-0). The Grizzlies, who will play their first 14 dual matches of the season on the road, do not play a home match until April 6 when they host Weber State.
??We??re traveling quite a bit this time of year to get as much match play as we can,?? head women??s tennis coach Jen Anderson said. ??We??ve never seen either of the two teams so it??s an unknown going into the weekend. Our team is going in with the mindset to get a pair of wins.??
Junior Mari Castello and sophomore Liz Walker continue to lead the Grizzlies in singles and doubles action. Castello, returning to play near her hometown of Belleville, Mo., has teamed up with Walker for a 12-4 doubles record for 2006-07, going 1-3 in duals this spring. Walker, from Wandin, Australia, is 6-9 overall in singles play at the No. 1 position, but is winless at 0-5 in dual match play.
Senior Cheyne Ursich and freshman Danni Paulson make up UM??s No. 2 doubles tandem. Ursich and Paulson are 5-6 on the year and 1-3 in dual-match action for the Griz.
??Our doubles is improving quite a bit,?? Anderson said. ??Liz and Mari always play great doubles, but our other two doubles teams have improved with each match. They have come along way from last year, a 100 percent improvement from 2006.??
Up next:
The Montana men??s team returns to the road March 2-4 with three matches on a Colorado road trip. UM will face Northern Colorado on Friday, Air Force on Saturday before finishing up with a dual at Denver on Sunday.
The Montana women??s team will take a week off before returning to action at Eastern Washington and Gonzaga. The Griz will open Big Sky play with the Eagles on Friday, March 9 and close the weekend with a neutral-site match against Gonzaga on Saturday, March 10.
