The University of Montana women's tennis team will attempt to put an end to a six-match losing streak when the Grizzlies travel to Idaho this week to play at Lewis-Clark State and Idaho. Montana (1-11) will face the Warriors (7-6) Thursday afternoon at 4 p.m. (MTN) and the Vandals (9-6) Friday afternoon at 2 p.m. (MTN).
The Grizzlies, who are 0-2 in Big Sky Conference matches, are on a six-match losing streak. UM dropped three matches on its last road trip, falling to Santa Clara, 6-1, Sacramento State, 7-0, and San Francisco, 6-1. UM's lone win on the season continues to be its 4-3 win over Drake in Columbia, Mo., in late February.
Lewis-Clark State is 7-6 on the season, losing its last three matches. On a California trip two weeks ago, the Warriors lost to Azusa Pacific, 8-1, Cal Baptist, 6-3, and Point Loma Nazarene, 6-3.
Against common opponents with Montana, LSCS also got swept by Gonzaga, 6-1, and Eastern Washington, 7-0.
In last year's meeting, Montana came away with a 6-1 win over Lewis-Clark State at Boise State's tournament.
Idaho is 9-6 after sweeping Oral Roberts, 5-2, and Central Oklahoma, 7-0, on a recent trip to Oklahoma.
The Vandals have also faced Gonzaga and Eastern Washington this season, defeating the Bulldogs, 5-2, and the Eagles, 4-3.
Montana posted a 5-2 victory over Idaho last year in an indoor match at Missoula.
"Everyone seems to be healthy right now, and we're still confident because we know we've played a tough schedule the last few weeks and haven't been at full strength in those matches," Montana women's tennis coach Jen Anderson said.
"Everyone on the team is looking forward to facing Lewis-Clark and Idaho to see if we can get some wins on our schedule. Some wins would certainly give us a morale boost and get us going into conference play on a high note."
Walker Heating Up: Sophomore Liz Walker opened the 2007 spring season with eight straight losses at No. 1 singles for Montana, but the Wandin, Australia, native has won three of her last four to improve to 3-9.
Walker started her streak with a 6-2, 6-2 win over Gonzaga's Emily Anderson and a 5-7, 6-2, 1-0 (10-4) victory over Santa Clara's Casey Knutson.
Sacramento State's Katrina Zheltova defeated Walker 6-0, 6-4, but she rebounded with a 2-6, 7-5, 1-0 (12-10) win over San Francisco's Camille Pamart in Montana's last match.
Walker had a similar late-season surge in 2006, winning six of her final seven matches to close out the season.
Up Next: Montana gets into the heart of its Big Sky Conference schedule when the Grizzlies face Weber State and Northern Arizona at the Lindsay Tennis Center in Missoula Friday and Saturday, April 6-7. Both matches are at 11 a.m.
