Women's tennis drops Big Sky opener at EWU

The University of Montana women's tennis team lost its Big Sky Conference opener Friday afternoon, falling at Eastern Washington, 5-2. The Grizzlies dropped to 1-7 on the season with the loss, 0-1 in league matches, while the Eagles improved to 2-6, 2-1 in Big Sky play.
EWU jumped out to a 5-0 lead, winning the doubles point and the first four completed singles matches before Montana picked up the final two points of the day.
In doubles play, sophomore Liz Walker and freshman Danni Paulson teamed up to win at No. 1, 8-4, but the Eagles rallied to win No. 2, 8-6, and No. 3, 8-4, to pick up the early point.
Walker (No. 1), sophomore Martyna Nowak (No. 3), freshman Jessica Souza (No. 4) and senior Malena Rosen (No. 6) all lost straight-set decisions in singles play before Paulson and freshman Kayla Moyse closed out the day with victories.
Paulson won at No. 2 over Iliana Petrova, 6-0, 6-1, while Moyse won at No. 5 over Amanda Mankovits, 7-6 (6), 6-4.
Montana plays Gonzaga Saturday morning at 9 a.m. (MTN) in Spokane.
