Montana women's tennis heads to conference championship

The University of Montana women??s tennis team will take the No. 4 seed into this week??s Big Sky Conference Tennis Championships played April 25-27 in Gold River, Calif. The Grizzlies (8-11, 5-3 BSC) will battle No. 5 seed Eastern Washington (9-13, 4-4 BSC) in a quarterfinal match on Friday at 11 a.m. (MTN).
No. 3 seed Montana State (11-5, 6-2 BSC) will take on No. 6 seed Northern Colorado (7-13, 3-5 BSC) in Friday??s other quarterfinal. Top seed Sacramento State (19-6, 8-0 BSC) and No. 2 seed Northern Arizona (14-7, 7-1 BSC) await the winners in the semifinal round, with the Hornets battling the lowest remaining seed.
Griz in the postseason tourney: Montana is making its 19th-straight appearance at the postseason tennis tournament. The Grizzlies, who have never won a conference title, have missed only one league tournament (1989) in the 25 years of Big Sky and Mountain West Conference-sponsored tennis.
The Grizzlies have lost in the semifinal round the last five years, four of those seasons falling to top-seed and perennial power Sacramento State.
Montana took the No. 5 seed into last year??s tournament, defeating No. 4 seed Eastern Washington in the quarterfinal round, 4-3. UM was swept 4-0 by eventual champion Sacramento State in the semifinals.

She and teammate senior Mari Castello ended the regular season as winners of their last eight contests at the No. 1 doubles position, while boasting a 6-2 conference mark on the year.
