Montana women's tennis heads to Cheney, Wash.

The University of Montana women's tennis team will continue its fall season as it travels to Cheney, Washington for the Eastern Washington/Gonzaga Invitational, Friday through Sunday, Sept. 26-28. The tournament will feature teams from Eastern Washington, Gonzaga, University of Idaho, University of Portland, Portland State, and the University of Seattle.
This will be Montana women's tennis' second tournament for the season. Seven players will be competing for the Grizzlies this weekend which include seniors Liz Walker and Martyna Nowak, junior Kayla Moyse and sophomores Amanda Bran, Rebecca Bran and Cara Lehman.
Montana women's tennis opened their 2008-09 season last weekend at the Washington State Cougar Classic in Pullman.
"We really want a wide breadth of match experience this fall," said first-year head coach Steve Ascher. ?Even though we have a very quick turnaround, the experience from last weekend has helped to guide me in determining how we will practice over the next few weeks."
Highlighting the Grizzlies' three-day performance in Pullman was the doubles team of Martyna Nowak and Liz Walker, who advanced to the championship match at No. 1 doubles.
The pair won tree straight doubles matches to advance to Sunday's title match. The pair fell to Bianca Jochimsen and Laura Baum of Boise State, 8-2.
It a great performance by Amanda Bren as well, who advanced to the third-place match at No. 3 singles. Bran defeated Gonzaga?s Sophie Lantta, 6-4, 7-6, in the opening round and Eastern Washington?s Judy Liening, 1-6, 6-0, 6-4, in the quarterfinals before dropping a 6-3, 7-5 decision to WSU?s Jessica Gomez in the semifinals.
Bran won the third place match by default.
"It was my first opportunity to see the players under pressure and in competition," said Coach Ascher. ?My expectation is that our focus on the development of each player?s game, in helping to build clarity as to what they need to do when they are on that court, will allow results will take care of themselves."
