Grizzlies claim two victories, one loss

The University of Montana men???s tennis team opened its first weekend of dual matches with two wins and one loss. The Grizzlies had a rough opening match to their spring season on Friday evening when they lost to Portland, 6-1. Montana rebounded Saturday morning with a victory in its first Big Sky Conference dual match against Portland State, 6-1, at the neutral site. On Sunday the Grizzlies traveled to Walla Walla, Wash., where they were victorious over Whitman, 6-1.
Montana is now 2-1 on the season, 1-0 in BSC play.
Against the Pilots, David Cysneiros was the lone Griz to earn a point in singles play at the No. 6 position. Although Raydner Ramos and Felipe Raw defeated Portland in the No. 2 doubles slot, the Pilots earned the point with victories in both the No. 1 and No. 3 slots. With the win, Portland improved to 9-2 on its season.
Saturday was a different story for the Grizzlies as they claimed victory in all three doubles matches and five of the six singles contests against the Vikings.
Mikolaj Borkowski was victorious in the No. 2 singles position against Viking Alex Vanderschelden, 3-6, 7-5, 6-2. Felipe Raw also won in the No. 3 slot against Kyle Erickson, 2-6, 6-3, 6-4.
Raydner Ramos defeated Jeff Cero in straight sets, 6-1, 6-2, and Carl Kuschke cruised to a 6-0, 6-0, win over Branislay Valach.
Cysneiros claimed his second singles win of the weekend in the No. 6 position over Alex Hart, 6-4, 6-2.
The Grizzlies played well on Sunday, winning the No. 1 and No. 2 doubles positions to claim the doubles point. They won five of the singles contests, four in straight sets.
Although they appeared to cruise through Sunday???s matches, head coach Kris Nord admitted it was tougher than it appears on paper. ???Whitman has a good team and we had a very tough schedule. We had a lot of tennis in three days. We got to the hotel at midnight last night and were up at 6:00 am to drive to Walla Walla.
???I am encouraged,??? Nord said. ???This was a good start to the season. Everyone played and competed very well.???
The Griz men???s tennis team is back in action after this weekend when the Grizzlies travel to Washington to play Eastern Washington March 13 and Lewis-Clark State on March 14. The men will face Idaho on March 15 before coming home.
