The University of Montana men???s tennis team improved to 2-1 Sunday after a 5-2 defeat of Gonzaga, who dropped to 2-4. Sophomore Carl Kuschke finished out the long weekend for the Grizzlies with a 3-0 trifecta at No. 3 singles.
Montana wins came en force with Kuschke and senior Mikolaj Borkowski winning at No. 1 doubles as well as with the combo of freshman Mike Facey and junior-transfer Josh Smith at No. 3 for the doubles point.
Kuschke and Borkowski topped Conor Feeney and Kevin Eischen 8-3 while Facey and Smith, competing together for the first time, defeated Levin Guillermo and Jake Davis 8-6.
Singles wins were notched by Raydner Ramos at No. 2 in a 6-3, 6-3 defeat of Guillermo; by Smith in a 6-2, 6-3 defeat of Jake Davis at No. 5; with a match-clinching Facey in his 6-2, 6-4 defeat of Tyler Campbell at No. 6; and by Kuschke, who owned the No. 3 slot for the Griz with his third straight win in a 6-4, 6-2 defeat of Roman Dojcak.
Kuschke, Smith and Facey all went 2-0 for the day at doubles and singles in their respective endeavors against the Bulldogs.
Following play Sunday, UM coach Kris Nord said, ???In spite of it being our third match of the weekend, we played very well today. Some guys might have felt a little fatigue setting in, but as a team we performed on the court and the scores reflect that.???
Of his powerful start for the Grizzlies in Portland, Kuschke said, ???This was our first weekend competing and I wanted to start strong. Having moved up to No. 3, I really wanted to prove to myself and also to Coach Nord that I belonged and could play at this level.???
??In mention of today???s heated contest, junior David Cysneiros said, ???Last year we had a really tough match with Gonzaga, and were fortunate to come out with the win. We knew that they would want to even the score with us, so we were mindful from the beginning.
???Both teams were fired up from the start, even though there was a little soreness from the two prior matches. All of the team responded well and we were able to pick up on some things that we had learned from our previous matches.
???Some teams have had a faster start to their season, and your first weekend can always be tough. It was a great physical test for us and it proved the level our conditioning. We hope that we will remain this fresh as we push further into our spring schedule, staying strong in the Big Sky through the season.???
The Grizzlies will take a two week break from competition and return to the courts in Bozeman March 6 and 7 to face Idaho and Montana State.
