The University of Montana Grizzlies needed to regain some momentum after a tough road trip. The Griz accomplished their goal with a 78-58 win over NAIA foe Carroll College.
The Saints got off to a quick start and led 12-8 after a 3-pointer by freshman guard and Missoula native Riley King with 13:05 to play in the first half. The Griz then went on a 10-0 run capped off with a bucket by senior forward Mathis Ward with 9:35 to play giving the Griz a 18-12 lead. They would not trail for the remainder of the game.
Ward scored 26, just two shy of his career high, to lead the Grizzlies who outscored the Saints 41-34 in the second half.
Junior guard Kareem Jamar scored 14 and chalked up seven assists for Montana. Sophomore guard Keron DeShieldsadded 15 points and two steals.
Carroll's junior guard Nick Jones scored 19 to lead the Saints, junior forward Dennis Mikelonis tallied 14 and junior forward Brett Ball added 12.
The Grizzlies outrebounded the Saints 38-29, junior forward Spencer Colemanled the Griz with seven.
Senior guard Will Cherrywas in uniform for the first time this season but didn't see any action in the game.
The Griz will next face South Dakota State next Saturday at Dahlberg Arena. The Jackrabbits also played in the NCAA tournament last year and boast one of the best guards in the mid-major ranks in Nate Wolters.
