The Grizzly men's tennis team swept Division-III opponents Whitman College and sixth-ranked UC Santa Cruz Saturday in a long day at the Whitman College Shootout in Walla Walla, Wash.
The Grizzlies started the day with an 8-1 victory over the Whitman Missionaries. Scores are calculated differently in D-III than in D-I, doubles matches count individually instead of as a single point.
The score appears to be lopsided but the match was hotly contested. Carl Kuschke came from behind to get the win over Andrew LaCava 5-7, 6-1, 11-9 in the No. 1 match.
In the No. 2 Mikolaj Caruk defeated Jeff Tolman 7-6 (8-6), 7-5 in another tight match. Andrew Warren at the No. 3 gained the only decisive singles victory when he defeated Sam Sadeghi 6-1, 6-0.
Michael Facey won the No. 4 match over Steven Rosten 7-6 (7-0), 6-3. Ethan Vaughn won his No. 5 match 6-3, 4-6, 10-7.
Ben DeMarois closed out the singles sweep with a 7-6, 7-6 win over Colton Malesovas in the No. 6.
The Griz continued their stellar doubles play, Caruk and Warren defeated Matt Tesmond and Conor Holton-Burke 8-4 at the No. 1 and Kuschke and DeMarios also won their match 8-5 over James Rivers and Sam Sadeghi at the No. 3.
The Missionaries got their lone point when Tolman and LaCava topped Facey and Vaughn 9-7 at the No. 2.
"Whitman is has a very disciplined team," coach Kris Nord said. "They played hard but we were able to closeout a lot of close matches and made the win look like a blowout."
The victory was the hard fought but the Grizzlies had just minutes to rest before going into the match with UC Santa Cruz.
The Banana Slugs came into the Saturday with a Friday night victory over Lewis-Clark State under their belt.
Despite short rest the Griz again performed well and gained the 7-2 win.
Montana again dominated the singles portion of the match winning five of the six matches. The only loss coming from the No. 6 where Cody Kohlmoos dropped a 6-3, 6-3 decision to Ian Stanley.
In doubles Facey and Vaughn continued their early season slump and lost to Stanley and Erik Rosner 8-2.
Nord was pleased with the performance despite the adverse conditions.
"It really was a marathon day," Nord said. "The wins were hard fought but we beat the sixth-ranked team in D-III, they are a good program and it shows what we can do."
