The Grizzly men's tennis team continued their winning ways with a 4-3 victory over Montana State Saturday morning at the Bobcat-Anderson Tennis Center in Bozeman.
Mikolaj Caruk led the way with a dominating 6-0, 6-3 win over Markus Schleuter in the No. 2 position. Caruk also team up with Andrew Warren to defeat Schleuter and reigning Big Sky Conference Player of the Week Niklas Brandes 8-5 in the No. 1 doubles match.
"Miko played great in both singles and doubles," Coach Kris Nord said. "He is playing great tennis right now and he needs to continue his success to help the team out."
There were a number of close matches with four of the six singles matches going into three sets. Carl Kuschke lost the No. 1 singles bout to Brandes in a match that not only went three sets but also included a tie-breaker, 7-6 (7-5), 3-6, 6-2.
Warren came from behind to win his No. 3 match over Alberto Fuentes 3-6, 6-1, 6-4.
"Andrew had a great win," Nord said. "The match could have gone either way but Andrew's win was key for us."
The lineup included some changes due to sickness. Ethan Vaughn who has played in the No. 5 slot for every match this spring didn't play. Andreas Luczak moved up from his normal No. 6 position to face Lander Jewett at the No. 5 and lost another tight match 6-2, 6-7 (5-7), 10-6.
Cody Kohlmoos got the nod at the No. 6 for the second time this spring and lost to Prithiv Sivasubramaniam 6-2, 2-6, 10-3.
With the win the Grizzlies move to a 4-1 record and the Cats fall to 1-4 with their lone victory coming against in a conference match with Portland State.
"The guys adjusted well," Nord said. "There was a pretty decent crowd and the altitude and the fast surface makes Bozeman a tough place to play."
The Griz now have a three-week break before heading to Boise to face Cal Poly and Boise State on March, 9.
