Driver’s return highlights fall tournament No. 4

Senior Haley Driver returned to competitive tennis after a year-and-a-half layoff, and the Montana women's tennis team won 16 singles and doubles matches over the weekend at the Matador Collegiate Invitational at Northridge, Calif.
One of only two schools not from Southern California in the field, the Grizzlies went 11-8 in singles and 5-5 in doubles at the three-day tournament.
"The team showed great improvement this weekend in how they are learning to engage and compete during pressure situations," said coach Steve Ascher. "We are continuing to learn how to put ourselves into a mindset that we can best develop and improve mentally, emotionally and physically.
"Everyone is doing an outstanding job in singles and doubles, and also of supporting one another so that we can raise our level as a team."
Driver, the 2014 Big Sky Conference MVP, played a pair of singles matches and three doubles matches with junior Francis Dean. They were Driver's first matches in a Griz uniform in 18 months, since going through knee surgery and rehab.
Driver defeated Elif Gabb of South Dakota State in straight sets in the C draw of singles, and Driver and Dean topped Emily Borkowski and Danielle Pham of Cal State Fullerton 8-5 in the opening round of the doubles A draw.
"It was exciting to watch Haley hit her first ball in live competition since April 2014," added Ascher. "Having the opportunity to be with the team and get her feet wet was big for her. And to have her back training again is a big boost for the team."
Sophomore Catherine Orfanos (3-1), freshman Lidia Dukic (2-2), sophomore Cam Kincaid (2-2) and Dean (2-2) all won multiple singles matches over three days, and all six players who competed in singles collected at least one win.
Competing in the C draw, Orfanos won her opening-round match before falling in the quarterfinals. She bounced back with straight-set wins over players from Cal State Fullerton and UC San Diego in consolation matches to finish in fifth place.
Dukic and Dean both won a pair of matches in the A draw. Kincaid won two matches in the consolation side of the B draw, defeating players from UC Riverside and UC Irvine.
Orfanos and Dukic won a pair of matches together in the doubles B draw, including an 8-1 victory over Cal State Northridge's Leslie Chang and Elisaveta Nosenko in consolation play.
Montana will conclude its fall tournament schedule in two weeks at the Gonzaga Invitational in Spokane.
