Grizzly men's tennis swept by Portland

On the second day of a back-to-back the Montana men's tennis team was unable to buck its losing streak in a 7-0 loss to the Portland Pilots in Oregon.
The Grizzlies (0-4/0-1 BSC) dropped the doubles point in the morning, losing all three matches to the Pilots (4-1). Coach Kris Nord emphasized the talent of Portland's roster, and also pointed to a good performance from his own doubles team in the three slot.
"Overall, I felt that our three doubles of Fisher and Casadevall played well," Nord said. "We were a little overmatched with the entire Portland team. They are awfully strong. But, I'm happy. I thought our guys competed, Portland is just very talented."
Portland's dominance on their home floor carried over into the singles competition. They won five of the six matches in straight sets. The lone Grizzly to push Portland to three sets was Semion Branzburg at No. 2. Branzburg took the opening set 7-5, but fell in the final two 6-3, 6-3 to Reid deLaubenfels.
"(deLaubenfels) won the Boise Tournament in the fall, he's very good," Nord said of the match. "Semion had his chances. He had a number of golden points in the second set that could have gone his way and didn't. I was really happy with how he competed."
Portland improved to 4-1 on the year. Their lone loss came at the hands of the nationally ranked Washington Huskies. Nord believes it was a good opportunity for his young team to see what they can become.
"It's good for our guys to see that level of tennis," he said. "It gives our guys something to shoot for."
Montana will host its first match of the season next Saturday, Feb. 28 against the Idaho State Bengals. The matches begin at 10 a.m.
