Griz in Vegas for ITA Mountain Regionals

The Montana men's tennis team's fall schedule reaches its apex this week, as the Griz head to Sin City to compete in the ITA Mountain Region Championships, Oct. 19-22 at the Darling Tennis Center in Las Vegas.

Head coach Kris Nord will bring his top six performers so far this fall to Vegas to compete against the region's best competition that features a big draw of over 128 players from across the western U.S.

For Nord, this is one of his last chances to measure his team's progress through the fall after just two tournaments at Utah and Boise State since the beginning of the semester.

"We're headed the right direction. September is typically not going to be our best tennis. I feel like we're kind of over the hump on that now. I like our team," says Nord.

Representing Montana in Vegas will be UM's breakout star from 2015-16 Victory Casadevall, who ran through the league table last year undefeated. Joining him are Montana's lone senior Peter Mimnagh-Fleming, newcomers Max Korkh and Nacho Tejerina, and the Grizzlies dynamic doubles duo Yannick Schmidl and Alex Canellopoulos.

The Schmidl/Canellopoulos duo was one of Montana's most dependable doubles units last season, winning 80 percent of their matches at 12-3 in the Big Sky.

"There's really good chemistry. They like playing with each other," says Nord of the junior/sophomore pair. "They're not a real classical doubles team in that they try and take the net. They play a lot of counter-punch doubles. But they do it well, so we're keeping them together."

Whatever they're doing, it's a formula that works, with the two continuing their success at the Dar Walters Classic in Boise earlier this fall.

"It's not always the way I want it played, but that doesn't matter, they get it done."
