Griz fall to Spiders

Having suffered tough losses in the desert, Montana (3-9) found little solace on its first day in the Commonwealth State, losing to Richmond (9-6) 7-0 in Richmond, Va., on Wednesday afternoon.
The Spiders took the lead early in doubles, where the Grizzlies have struggled this season.
At No. 1, Brittany Boys and Katya Salas defeated Hannah Sulz and Cam Kincaid 6-1. At No. 2, Gaby Rosales and Ana Ramirez defeated Catherine Orfanos and Francis Dean 6-3. At No. 3, Anna Abadias Morales and Emily Gitman defeated Stanzi Stuijt and Lidia Dukic 6-1, earning the Spiders a 1-0 lead over the Grizzlies heading into singles.
Despite hard-fought battles, Montana was unable to win in singles against Richmond.
At No. 1, Anna Abadias Morales defeated Francis Dean 5-7, 6-3, 10-4. At No. 2, Gaby Rosales defeated Lidia Dukic 6-2, 6-2.
At No. 3, Brittany Boys defeated Hannah Sulz 6-4, 6-4. At No. 4, Kelsey Williams defeated Cam Kincaid 7-6, 7-6.
At No. 5, Ana Ramirez defeated Catherine Orfanos 6-1, 6-3. At No. 6, Katya Salas defeated Stanzi Stuijt 6-2, 6-2.
"They played tough," Kincaid said. "Richmond played well against us. We had a few close matches where they were able to pull it out."
Despite the adversity faced by the Grizzlies the past month on the road, Kincaid sees much in her teammates that can't be observed simply by looking at a scorecard.
"We all fought hard and came out giving our best," she said. "The team has been improving in that area, fighting and competing for not just every game but every point."
On Friday Montana will face another daunting challenge against No. 58 Old Dominion, a team Kincaid and her teammates are not afraid to challenge.
"We are super excited for Friday's match, as we get another opportunity to play a nationally ranked school," she said. "We have nothing to lose, so we are going to come out strong and definitely take these opportunities to learn and grow."
This season Montana has played matches against nationally recognized programs such as UNLV and Arizona State, and now Old Dominion. Coach Steve Ascher embraces the challenges top programs present to his team.
"There is nothing better than playing solid teams day in and day out," he said. "The only thing you can do is improve and try to put all the things you are learning into the next match."
For fans and players alike, every team has a trait that is associated with them, whether it be speed, strength or passion to name just a few. Ascher sees resiliency becoming a defining trait of his team.
"The best trait the team is learning is resiliency," he said. "I build these schedules to test people, and right now we are being challenged and having to fight tooth and nail to win even a singles or doubles match.
"The players are learning to be strong and willing to take risks in the face of adversity. There is no greater teacher than life."
Montana plays Friday against No. 58 Old Dominion (10-5) at 11 a.m. in Norfolk.
