The Montana women's tennis team dropped a 4-3 decision on the road Saturday against Big Sky Conference favorite Sacramento State at the Spare Time Indoor Tennis Center in Gold River, Calif.
The Grizzlies (1-10, 0-2 BSC) won the doubles point but could only win two of six singles matches as they came up a point short of pulling off the upset.
"We are putting into play the ideas we have been practicing and have learned in our prior matches. The energy was solid all day, and we are beginning to show more discipline throughout the lineup," said coach Steve Ascher.
Montana jumped out to a 1-0 lead by winning the doubles point for just the second time this season against a Division I opponent.
Catherine Orfanos and Hannah Sulz rolled to a 6-0 blanking at No. 1, and Nathalie Joanlanne and Cam Kincaid came through with a 6-3 win at No. 3.
Kincaid returned to the lineup in Friday's 7-0 loss at UC Davis for the first time since last April because of an injury. Her first victory of the season came a day later against the Hornets (3-7, 2-1 BSC).
Orfanos won 6-1, 6-1 at No. 3 over Carolina Chernyetsky, her first singles victory this season over a Division I opponent. Joanlanne won her fourth singles match of the dual season with a 6-4, 3-6, 6-3 victory at No. 4.
Sacramento State won the other four singles matches in straight sets, with Sulz pushing Ana Loaiza Esquivias to a 7-5 tiebreaker in the second set at No. 1.
"Cat played a very smart singles match, and Nathalie showed determination and understanding in pulling out a three-set victory," said Ascher.
"As we continue to get healthy and develop, we are going to make other teams have to work their tails off if they are going to beat us."
Montana will make its home debut next weekend at the Peak Racquet Club in Missoula. The Grizzlies will host Idaho State on Friday, Southern Utah on Saturday and Boise State on Sunday.
