Griz open league play with win over UND
3/10/2018 5:02:00 PM | Men's Tennis
North Dakota came out and won the first game on each of the three doubles courts, but that's about all the fight the Fighting Hawks could muster against a determined Griz squad as the Montana men's tennis team routed UND 7-0 in their Big Sky Conference opener.
The Grizzlies improved to 4-2 on the year and are now 1-0 in league play after returning home from a confidence-boosting trip to Las Vegas earlier in the week. Meanwhile, the Fighting Hawks, who started their conference season with a huge upset win over Sacramento State, falls to 1-5 in league play.
"They're a lot better team than the score showed. This was our best match of the season," said Interim Head Coach Jason Brown. "I think the fact it was the first match of conference and knowing this leads into our goals for the rest of the season, these guys came in super focused, super sharp, and they didn't blink. They kept their foot on the gas."
The match was the third in a busy week for the Griz, who fell to a tough UNLV squad on Wednesday then bounced back for an epic come-from-behind 4-3 win over Ball State on Thursday before flying home and starting conference play a day later.
"The Ball State match was a rollercoaster, but the whole trip was very helpful to start well in conference," said senior Yannick Schmidl. "I think it all came together for us today. Everybody was in a good rhythm. We had good matches in Vegas, and It showed today."

Montana's No. 77 ranked doubles pair of Yannick Schmidl and Alexander Canellopoulos led UM's charge in the doubles round, leading UND's Buth/Martinez pair 4-3 on court one when the Griz clinched the point.
Max Korkh and Ludvig Hallgren cruised to victory on court three with a 6-1 win. Victor Casadevall and Ignacio Tejerina clinched the doubles point shortly after with a 6-2 win on court two, and the Griz never looked back.
In the singles round, Schmidl - one of Montana's best overall players - looked his very best, blanking UND's Annei Laska 6-0, 6-0 on court two. Korkh also made quick work of his opponent, letting only one game slip in a 6-0, 6-1 win over Davide Callegari on court four to put UM up 3-0 in short order.
Shortly after, Casadevall clinched the match for the Griz with another clean performance in the 6-2, 6-1 win over Lukas Buth on court one for his twentieth singles win of the year.
Canellopoulos then got over the hump in the only three-set match of the day, rebounding from a first set tiebreaker loss to win 6-7 (3-7), 6-4, 1-0 (10-7). Despite the match already sealed in the Grizzlies' favor, the junior from Greece dug deep to grind out the win.
"We talked about the fact that I want to see you guys win with your B, or C or D game, that it's not always going to be easy. And he did. He problem solved his way out of it and got to join all his teammates in winning," said Brown.
Hallgren put UM up 6-0 with a dominant 6-0, 6-1 win on court six, dropping his first game of the season at home in the 6-1 second set. Tejerina capped the win on court five with a 6-4, 6-2 victory for the Griz.
Match results aside, it was a special day for Griz tennis, as the team honored long-time head coach Kris Nord before the match with a custom maroon and silver racquet, embossed with a "Go Griz" on the frame.
The racquet was a small token from the team to say thank you for the 37 years of service he gave to the program before taking over as coach of the UM golf team full time this spring.
"I'm very thankful for him. He's the guy who brought me here, he trusted me, and that's why I'm here," said Schmidl, a senior. "He's not officially our coach anymore, but he's always rooting for us. It's great to see him here, and being able to give him a good time makes us all happy."
The Griz now enter their final bye week of the season before starting a six-match road swing that will see them start in Sacramento against Sac. St. on March 23, and swing through Reno for a match against Nevada en route to Weber State and Idaho State.
